I Love To Read!
February will be packed with fun reading activities for I Love to Read Month at WMES. Students and staff will celebrate literacy with a short story contest, mystery readers, a Skype visit with author Dan Gutman, dress-up days and lots of great books! The month will wrap up with the 2nd annual WMES talent show on March 2.
All About Dinosaurs
Our kindergartners recently discovered a giant mystery object in their classroom! The surprise inside ignited student curiosity that delivered amazing lessons in math, science, reading and writing.

As part of this thematic unit, students recorded observations in journals, investigated fossils and turned the lunchroom into a dinosaur exhibit.
"Thematic units provide one of the best vehicles for integrating content areas in a way that makes sense to children and helps them make connections to transfer knowledge they learn and apply it in a meaningful way. Thematic units also address the diverse learning styles of the students we serve." -PBS Teachers: Integrated Teaching Units
Growth Through Connections and Opportunities
WMMS students experienced our district mission in action during their winter exploratory day. They spent the day learning with their teachers through sports, service and creativity.

Exploratory choices included tie dying, volunteer work at the primary school, a visit to Feed My Starving Children, robotics, skiing, graffiti art and more.

Special thanks to all of the parents and community members who create an amazing ice fishing opportunity for our middle school students every winter.
The Future of the Primary School
Our school district is more than halfway through a  2-year reorganization plan . One large component of the plan includes exploring options for additional programs and services at the primary school.

Community members and district staff gathered on December 14 at WMPS for a visioning session.

The agenda included a collaborative effort to identify strategic advantages and challenges and to brainstorm and prioritize opportunities .
Attendees showed strong support for opportunities including infant and toddler care, senior programs and teen programs. District leaders will evaluate these options in coming months.

Mystery Pic Reveal
Last month we asked you where part of the original Watertown High School is still standing.

We had quite a few correct answers this month but the fastest replies came from:

  • Jessie Billiet
  • Susanne Derner
  • Traci Bergstrom
The lower level of the original 1911 high school still stands as the middle section of the west end of the primary school (the boiler room, part of the cafeteria and the old boys locker room).

If you look at the picture above, the current primary school playground would be on the back side of the building. Dirt was backfilled to raise the grade of the building which means part of the original first floor is now underground. The original front entrance is now in the back hallway.

The top two floors of the original building were removed in the mid 1980s. Alumni, like Jessie Billiet, remember that students in grades 4-6 were transported to the Waverly Elementary School (which was vacant at the time) for an entire school year during the demolition and remodel.

The current square shape with the center courtyard came together in a series of additions in 1938, 1952, 1974, 1987 and 1990.
