Royal Park Golf Club



Arthur G. McKee and Waldo Sexton developed Royal Park Golf Club in 1924. Most people know these two men purchased the property that became McKee Jungle Gardens (1922). These land developers also formed Royal Park Development Company in 1923 with plans to develop a hotel, golf course, and large subdivision. The golf course was the Royal Park Golf Club, which today is Vero Beach Country Club.

Guessing from the clothing styles, these two photos were taken in the 1920s.

Dave McCormick was the second winter golf pro at the Royal Park Golf Course. He was in Vero Beach from 1928 until 1933. He came from the St. Clair Country Club in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. McCormick brought his assistants G. Paroline and Walter Johnson with him to Vero.

Waldo, Dave McCormick, Adelaide and Herman Zeuch. Zeuch was an Iowa banker and one of the organizers of three large Canadian development projects, at one time owning 100,000 acres in Canada from which he made $88,000 in just three years.

Zeuch saw possibilities of development in Florida and came to Vero in 1909. He organized the Indian River Farms Company, composed of Iowan and Illinois businessmen. In 1912, the company had thousands of acres of swamp land drained making way for development.

The final plat of the original ‘Town of Vero’ was adopted in 1913. Zeuch later became President of the Indian River Farms Company and played an important role in the town’s design.

This is the 1st clubhouse at Royal Park Golf Course. Looks much the same as many of the older homes in the area of today's Vero Beach Country Club.
