Seeking the Gifts

By: Adrianne Finley Odell

Dog just barfed on the carpet.
Little Dalia is having a temper tantrum.
Oatmeal got burnt while tending to the first two.
Then forty-five minutes late to work because of all of these.

Breathe. Deep. Breaths.

What makes us human is that we all have experiences that test us. We also all have power to choose our response. And it’s human to screw up sometimes. Well, many times. But each day is a new day and we have an opportunity to hit the reset button.

Now let’s look at a day in the life of our children.

Harper called Amelia a “bad name.”
William pushed Rees at recess.
Ellis posted a mean insta about Shea.

Teachers and administrators breathe….deep...breaths. Then step in as needed. Talk with the students about their choices. Cite the school’s core values or one of the 7 Habits-- maybe “Seek First to Understand, then to be Understood?” or “Think Win-Win.” We aim to show the students that they have the power to hit their own reset button. And as educators, we must recognize that children need the opportunity each and every day to try again, to get help with learning important social skills, to be forgiven for being human, and sometimes to have the freedom to reinvent themselves ...

Northwestern University Coordinator
Yearbook Co-Sponsor
In room 232 of the Upper School, you may find nine Roycemore Upper School students silently writing, heads bowed over their desks, eyes focused on their laptops. Instructor Dr. Dori Franck is teaching Movies and Foodies, a short course Roycemore offers during the January Short Term (JST). Ready or Not: Preparing Our Kids to Thrive in an Uncertain and Rapidly Changing World
Clinical Psychologist and Author
March 10th
7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

When her ground-breaking book, The Price of Privilege, came out in 2006, respected clinician Madeline Levine, Ph.D. was among the first to disseminate the research about the deficits created by parents giving kids of privilege too much of the wrong things and not enough of the right things. Continuing to address the mistaken notions about what children need to thrive, Levine tore down the myth that good grades, high test scores, and college acceptances should define the parenting endgame. In her highly anticipated book, Ready or Not: Preparing Our Kids to Thrive in an Uncertain and Rapidly Changing World, she continues the discussion showing how these same parenting practices, combined with a desperate need to shelter children from discomfort and anxiety, are setting future generations up to fail.
