Listen When it is Hard

By: Adrianne Finley Odell
Last Thursday during our professional development time, the Roycemore faculty participated in a webinar offered by the Independent School Association of Central States (ISACS) on “Tools for Having Courageous Conversations Around Race, Culture & Beliefs” by Homa Tavanger. The webinar was one of several activities that the faculty are participating in this year as part of our commitment to support diversity, equity, and inclusion at Roycemore. We will be continuing this work during our February Professional Development day, organized by our faculty diversity committee.

One of the strategies highlighted by Tavanger in the webinar is “listen when it is hard.” I thought about just what good advice this is whether the topic is diversity and inclusion, or practically anything. Listening is practiced far too little in our society today, however, we can learn so much just by listening. We should listen when it is hard, AND when it isn’t.

Listening opens up space for understanding.

Listening offers an opportunity to empathize.

Listening helps us to be less judgmental.

Listening is loving...

Preview Night
JST Expo
The annual State of the School presentation is coming up on January 30th. Head of School, Adrianne Finley Odell, and Board Chair, Tom Ellis, will share an update on where we are as a school and where we are heading.

Following the State of the School, Lower School families will get to enjoy Preview Night . This is a chance for parents to visit the classroom where their child will be next year, meet the teacher, and hear about all the exciting curriculum, projects, and activities that their student can look forward to next year. Fourth grade families will get a chance to meet with Middle School faculty to learn what they can expect next year for their children.

We will also be hosting the annual JST Expo (formerly known as the JST Share) on the same evening. This will give all families - not just Upper School - a chance to see what the students worked on during their January Short Term projects. Topics for this year range from architecture, costume design, microbiology, African-American studies, and food blogging - just to name a few!

Three Cheers
Did you know that a group of Roycemore students serve as regular Tech Tutors to members of the Northwestern community? Roycemore offers regular tech tutoring sessions to members of Northwestern University's Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) . They can bring in a personal device, such as a phone, laptop, or tablet, and Roycemore Upper School students will give them one-on-one tutoring to help them get more comfortable using the technology on their device. This has been a great way for our students to help give back to the community while also sharpening their own communication skills.
Parent Tips
One of our Northwestern University partners is The Family Institute . They are a leading relationship-based behavioral health organization that is committed to strengthening relationships between children, adolescents, couples, and families. Every month they offer parenting tips that are designed to help build strong relationships within a family. Feel free to check out their January tips below.
