Roycemore School Weekly Newsletter
From The Head of School
Inundated

By: Adrianne Finley Odell- Head of School
It’s staggering. This year, every minute of every day:

  • 188 million emails are sent
  • Over 18 million texts are sent
  • Over 4.5 million YouTube videos are viewed
  • Nearly 4.5 million Google searches are conducted

The statistics in the graph above were compiled by  Domo from multiple sources  to demonstrate the incredible volume of data that is generated in our world today. This is the world our children live in– the world of big data. And our children begin creating a digital footprint, often from the moment they are born– perhaps even before! Their generation is the generation of the digital age like none other. What does this mean for them? What decisions will be made for them by algorithms created by A.I. machines? What are the ramifications- both positive and negative- of living in a deeply digitally connected world...

Peace Mural Project
Thank you to everyone who helped make the Kids' Guernica Peace Mural a big success. Evanston Mayor Steve Hagerty was on hand last Thursday to welcome the delegation of artists from Japan and watch our students make their final touches on the Roycemore murals.

Both murals will now travel to Nagasaki to be part of an exhibit next summer commemorating the 75th anniversary of the end of WWII. Thank you again to Dr. Miyazaki, Professor of Anthropology at Northwestern University and Roycemore parent, for coordinating this wonderful invitation and getting Roycemore involved.
Leadership Week
Last week was Leadership Week in Lower School and every student got a chance to make a difference. Students wrote letters to public service workers acknowledging all that they do for our community. Then they were able to personally deliver them to area post offices, fire stations, public libraries, police stations, and CTA facilities.

They also were assigned kindness buddies. All week the students went beyond and above in showing acts of kindness to each other all throughout the week and then on Friday guessed who was their assigned kindness buddy. What a great way for Griffins to demonstrate that everyone on campus is respected!

Upcoming FAN Talk
Roycemore School is proud to be an event sponsor for this upcoming FAN ( Family Action Network ): The Water Dancer: An Evening with Ta-Nehisi Coates . National Book Award-winning author of "We Were Eight Years in Power" and "Between the World and Me".

"The Water Dancer" is a boldly imagined work of magic and adventure, love and separation, and the power of resistance.   It   is the story of America’s oldest struggle—the struggle to tell the truth.

Three Cheers
Kindness is spreading across Roycemore and a group of 4th Graders have been getting in on the action. During their lunch time, these students have been volunteering in the Roycemore library doing tasks such as shelving, organizing and decorating. They've learned more about the Dewey Decimal System, how to process books so they are ready for check out, and even created a display highlighting books that have been banned in various communities all through history. Definitely a good conversation starter for anyone who loves books.
