Roycemore School Weekly Newsletter
From The Head of School
You are Beautiful!

By: Adrianne Finley Odell- Head of School
It was great to see so many families join us for Miniature School night last Thursday. We have welcomed 63 new students to our school this year and they are all getting settled into their routines at Roycemore. At many schools, Miniature School night is known as “Back-to-School Night” so in homage to our parents coming “Back-to-School” they had the opportunity to hear what their children heard during our opening all-school assembly. This annual tradition brings all of our children together–from our youngest learners to our seniors as we kick off the school year.

I opened the assembly talking about Roycemore’s Core Values: Respect, Scholarship, Compassion, Integrity, and Community. We strive to live by these core values each day– to think about how to make our school a very special place, where everyone feels valued, where everyone is appreciated for who they are, and where we consider the great privileges that we all have and how we can make a difference in the world around us. Through appreciation and love of each other, we build a stronger community. Through the love of community, we find ways to make a difference well beyond Roycemore.

The students learned that it doesn’t matter how young or old you are, what color, race, or religion you are, or what financial background your family has… you can make a difference.

Special Announcement

Roycemore to be the 1st High School in the world to host a Creative Jam!
Creative Jams are Adobe events where local design thought leaders share a behind-the-scenes peek into their processes and projects. Teams compete in a tournament-style event that puts their creative skills to the test using Adobe Creative Cloud products. They started about 4 years ago and today they take place all around the globe in professional settings, design settings, college settings, and now in a high school setting! Roycemore is proud to partner with Adobe and Northwestern University to embark on this quest to host the first Creative Jam for High School students. All Upper School Roycemore students are encouraged to participate and more information will be coming soon.

Kids Guernica-Nagasaki Peace Mural Project
Roycemore will be participating in a global collaborative art project this month to commemorate the upcoming anniversary of WWII. Our students will work with Dr. Miyazaki, Professor of Anthropology at Northwestern University and Roycemore parent, to create a peace mural that will be displayed next summer at the 75th anniver sary of the bombing of Nagasaki. Dr. Miyazaki serves as a Peace Correspondent for the City of Nagasaki and brought this wonderful opportunity to our school. His son and Roycemore 8th Grader, Xavier, will be helping to take the lead on this project and all students are invited to get involved. There will be an after school painting workshop taking place later this month and interested students are encouraged to stop by.

Upcoming FAN Event
Does college still work? Is the system designed just to protect the privileged and leave everyone else behind? Or can a college education today provide real opportunity to young Americans?

Roycemore is proud to be an event sponsor for this upcoming FAN presentation by New York Times bestselling author, Paul Tough, who will tackle these questions and more.

Art Corner
This Month's Art Corner features the work of Roycemore Kindergarten students.

How are artists inspired? What inspires you?
Kindergarten students picked organic pre-cut shapes and arranged them on their paper until they discovered what the shapes can be turned into. Some students saw their shape as a volcano, ocean wave, or a tree! They then came up with a plan, glued their shapes to the page, continue brainstorming, sketched a picture incorporating their shape, and finished their project off by adding color. A beautiful display of creative problem solving.
Community Notes
Sewing on Central is a small studio that teaches the craft of sewing to children and adults. They have a sunlit studio right on Central Street here in Evanston. They are celebrating their one year anniversary and will be hosting a community event that is free and open to children and adults.
