Rule of the Week
Week of May 8-12, 2017

A great discussion this week was what can a player do when his ball is "ON" the putting green.
  • Can he stand on his line of putt?
  • Is a player in violation when she/he uses Aim Point?
  • Can I use my hand to brush aside sand or loose impediments?
  • What can and can't I do on the putting green?
The answers come from the Rule 16-1 and a good decision.

The " line of putt" is the line that the player wishes his ball to take after a   stroke  on the  putting green. Except with respect to Rule   16-1e , the line of putt includes a reasonable distance on either side of the intended line. The line of putt does not extend beyond the hole.

16-1. General

a. Touching Line of Putt

The line of putt must not be touched except:
  1. the player may remove loose impediments, provided he does not press anything down;
  2. the player may place the club in front of the ball when addressing it, provided he does not press anything down;
  3. in measuring - Rule 18-6;
  4. in lifting or replacing the ball - Rule 16-1b;
  5. in pressing down a ball-marker;
  6. in repairing old hole plugs or ball marks on the putting green - Rule 16-1c; and
  7. in removing movable obstructions - Rule 24-1.
  (Indicating line of putt on putting green - see Rule   8-2b )

Penalty for Breach of Rule
  16-1 Match play   - Loss of hole;   Stroke play   - Two strokes.

Decision 16-1a/8 -- Loose Impediments Removed from Line of Putt with Cap or Towel
QUESTION. A player touches his line of putt in brushing aside loose impediments with his cap or with a towel. Is this permissible?
ANSWER. Yes, provided he did not press anything down.
