Crazy Times
What crazy times we’ve gone through over the last few weeks. From the fun of Snow Joke, to the weather-related cancellation of Run For The Luck Of It, to cancellation of all mass participation events due to COVID-19, to school and business closures, and the Governor’s “Stay At Home” directive. My head’s spinning just thinking about all the changes and pivots.
Let’s start with some challenging news and then go to something more upbeat.
We’ve suspended all registration activities for the Missoula Marathon through May 7
th
. To see more about why and what’s next, go
HERE
. Rest assured, were still hoping (and planning) for the race to take place as scheduled. But we just needed time to “take a breath” and give us some time to make good choices about the race and the public health of our community.
Speaking of pivoting – we’ve been able to change the Run For The Trees and Sweathouse Half Marathon to Virtual Events. Check those race pages on the RWM website for more details.
We’ve also converted all our marathon training classes to digital/virtual opportunities.
And, we’ve created several fun and unique virtual resources. If you haven’t already checked it out – see our Beer Run Bingo by clicking
HERE
. We’ve teamed up with Runner’s Edge to created weekly Strava Challenges. Go
HERE
go find out more.
We’ll continue to work to provide you resources as we run and walk through this pandemic. And, remember, you can always go
HERE
to get COVID-19 Updates as they related to RWM members and activities.
Most of all Stay Home, Stay Safe and Stay Healthy. In the meantime, I’ll see you on the road, tracks and trails…………. from at least 6’ away :-)

Where are you from? What brought you to Missoula?
I’m from Glasgow, Montana. I had a friend attending UM & after visiting her several times, I fell in love with Missoula, so I transferred to UM to finish my accounting degree.

It's Spring, which, in addition flowers and more daylight, means it's time to get back on the trails! But with trail running season set to begin, we want to take a minute to revisit some basic trail use etiquette to keep our single track trails single track!
As the snow and ice recede there are often big puddles left in the trail that can permanently turn your brand new shoes a nice shade of brown. Not to mention that puddle can also soak your feet and be mildly uncomfortable for a few steps.
That’s okay! We aren’t trail runners because we like clean shoes and dry feet, rather, we run on trails to connect with the dirt and enjoy every hardcore moment of it.
Every time we run around a puddle or mud spot we help widen a trail. Throughout a Spring runoff season it is easy to see where puddles have caused runners and hikers to tromp through fragile trail-side growth, thus causing a single path to become a double- or triple-track highway. Tromp through that puddle and keep that path narrow!
If the entire length of the trail is a sloppy mess it’s also probably a good idea to find another trail or give it another few days to dry out. Deep footprints can ruin a trail for a few years. After a full winter on the roads, what’s another day or two in the name of trail preservation?
We know you are excited to get back to trail running, and we are too! We will see you on the trails with puddle-stained shoes.
Happy Trails,
Forrest Boughner

Run Wild Missoula is challenging you to join a movement with us - a movement to inspire and encourage movement.
As runners and walkers, we know that regular exercise improves our physical & mental well-being. We have a unique opportunity to connect our passion for the sport with all of the non-runner’s (and walkers) in our lives. Let’s help them discover all of the great physical and mental benefits by helping them to remove any barriers to participation.
Our challenge to you:
Bring these non-runners into the world of running and walking - help inspire their first run, celebrate their accomplishments, “show” them the way, and teach them that a run is a run, regardless if it's 5 miles, 5 blocks, or 5 laps around the kitchen table.
Each week during the COVID-19 pandemic, we will be challenging you to share a piece of your running or walking journey to help inspire and encourage your family, friends and colleagues. Help them to Release Their Runner (or Walker)!
