Run Wild Missoula Executive Director: More of the Good Stuff
|
At Run Wild Missoula, we love to promote and support running and walking for people of all ages and abilities. But, as a Nonprofit Organization, we also have a responsibility to give back to our community. To that end, our donation and sponsorship policy calls for us to make meaningful and impactful contributions of money and/or resources to organizations and events that meet a demonstrated community need.
I’m pleased to announce that the RWM Board of Directors has recently chosen to make donations to a number of local organizations that are all making a difference in the Missoula community.
RWM will also contribute $10,000 to YWCA Missoula’s “See Them Home” capital campaign as they raise funds for a facility to house their programs related to domestic violence and family homelessness. To learn more about the campaign, click
HERE
.
These are on top of contributions that we made earlier this year to Take Flight Missoula, Girls Using Their Strengths, Youth Homes and Missoula Parks & Recreation. As members, we should all be proud that your club has been able to make in excess of $50,000 in charitable donations to the community this fiscal year.
But, we’re also about more than just giving money away. The Montana Trail Crew (a division of Run Wild Missoula) recently spent an evening clearing trail on the Albert Point Trail in the Nine Mile Ranger District of the Lolo National Forest. This trail is in the Petty Mountain area near Alberton and represents a lesser-explored route. With past work days on the Inez Creek Trail (south side of Mt. Dean Stone) and the Sousa Trail (South Hills Spur/Barmeyer Trail area – north side of Mt. Dean Stone), MTC has been busy this year helping to improve and maintain our local trails. Keep your eyes open for additional trail work opportunities via Montana Trail Crew.
It’s a good feeling to be able to give back to your community. Needless to say - we smiled a lot during July at Run Wild Missoula. Until next month, I’ll be out on the roads, tracks and trails thinking of additional ways to make a difference in Missoula.

As we’re well into the summer season (and with fall not all that far away), it’s prime time for all of us to be putting in some big miles. That means lots of time running, walking, and run-walk-running on the local roads, tracks, and trails. Which means that in addition to hydration, nutrition, gear, and routes, we should be thinking a bit more about safety. A few quick reminders:
- At a minimum, let someone know where you’re running and when you expect to be back.
- Better yet, run with a training partner
- Carry your cell phone in case of emergency
- Carry your bear spray if heading onto the trails (especially as we come into prime berry season)
- Always be aware of your surroundings and maintain situational awareness
- Keep the music down (or use over-the-ear, bone-conducting headphones) so that you can hear what’s going on around you
- Although we’re seeing lots of daylight this time of year; don’t forget your headlamp and reflective clothing if you’ll be out in the dark
It’s easy and convenient to simply throw on your shoes, put in the earbuds and head out the door. But, please take a few minutes to think about your safety before each and every workout.

Where are you from? What brought you to Missoula?
Originally I’m from Tokyo, Japan. However, now I really feel that Missoula is my home town because of the family, friends, working place, and marathon training class that I have here and love so much. So whenever I’m asked where I am from, I make it a rule to answer that I am from Missoula.
Do you know someone from our Run Wild Missoula community that we should get to know better?

Are you having a hard time getting motivated to start running, or do you lack consistency? Don’t know where to begin? Don’t want to do it alone? Perhaps you are coming back from a long absence from running and need to build up slowly.
If so, Beginner Running 101
is just the thing for you! This fun training program will get you ready for Run Wild Missoula's fall races, like Diva Day and the Pumpkin Run. And, if all goes well, once the class is over you'll continue running as part of a fit, active and healthy lifestyle.
This is truly a beginner's class, so don't be intimidated. Pace doesn't matter - all you need is the willingness to take that first step. You'll start by mixing walking with running. Gradually the run segments will increase and you'll find yourself running further than you maybe ever thought possible! Your goal will be to complete a 5K run, and our goal will be to inspire you to keep on going long after this training class is finished.
Join class leaders
Miranda and Spring
on
Wednesdays
at 6:00 PM and
Saturdays
at 8:30 AM. The first class will meet on Wednesday, September 4th.
