Run Wild Missoula Executive Director: Loving The Trails We Love
|
Recently, the
Montana Trail Crew
(MTC) (which is a part of Run Wild Missoula) was mentioned in an article posted in Outside Online. The article was titled “Trail Runners Are Lazy Parasites” (you can see the article by clicking
HERE
) and MTC was singled out as an advocacy group organized to get trail runners out doing trail work.
Yes, Montana Trail Crew has done some good work on our local trail – thanks in large part to folks like Jimmy Grant (a RWM board member), Jesse Carnes and Forrest Boughner. But, at the same time, we’ve only scratched the surface of taking care of the trails in our back yard.
We have miles and miles of trails on Sentinel, Jumbo, North Hills, the Rattlesnake, Pattee Canyon, Blue Mountain and, coming soon, Dean Stone. And, us Missoula runners love us some trails. In fact, we’re loving some of those trails just a bit too much. Erosion, braiding, short cuts, doggie doo, and unofficial trails are all problems that we see within our trail system. With so many trails, there’s always maintenance work that needs to be done. And, someone has to step in to undertake the work to add new trails.
As the article suggests, we, as trail runners, haven’t shouldered quite enough of the load in giving some love back to our trail network. Although MTC has made a good start in being part of the solution, there’s so much more to do. So, the next time you see us put out a call for volunteers for a trail work day, please give some serious consideration to signing up. The same goes if you see a work day being coordinated by other great Missoula groups, such as Mountain Bike Missoula or Five Valleys Land Trust.
Let’s continue to be the leaders in trail work and trail advocacy. Taking a line from the article, let’s show that we like beer and brats as much as the next group. With over 1,600 members, there’s no reason that Run Wild Missoula/Montana Trail Crew can’t be well represented every time there’s an opportunity to work on our trail system. It’s the least we can do for the trails that we love.
Until next month, I’ll be getting my Pulaski ready before heading out on the roads, tracks and trails.
Tony

Where are you from? What brought you to Missoula?
Where are you from? What brought you to Missoula? I grew up in Flagstaff, Arizona: the Missoula of Arizona. We moved up here a few years after college because we liked Flagstaff, but wanted to be where we didn't grow up. Plus there are more mountain ranges here.
Run Wild Missoula would like to thank Forrest for leading two of our Spring Trail Classes, as well as for all of his involvement with RWM and MTC!
Do you know someone from our Run Wild Missoula community that we should get to know better?

It doesn’t matter how fast you run or how far you go—what’s important is that you take part, and how you do it is up to you. Run a lap around your block, take your dog for a long walk, or call your friends for a pick-up game in the park. The important thing is that you have fun being active—and you inspire others to join you.

Spread the Word: Missoula Marathon Volunteers Needed
|
|
As hard as it may be to believe, the Missoula Marathon will take place this month. A huge part of the marathon’s success is due to the amazing volunteers that show up every year. And, we’re sure hoping that those folks show up again in 2019.
That’s where you as RWM members come in. If you have the ability, we’d love to see as many members as possible lend a hand – we have hundreds of options starting the week before the race and extending into the week following. From picking up trash along the course before the race, to helping in our merchandise booth, being a course monitor and helping clean out aid station supplies the day after, there’s a wide variety of tasks of all types. Volunteering is easy, just click
HERE
to go to our volunteer page.
The other way that you can help is by letting friends, family, co-workers, clients, customers, and others in your circle of influence know about the need for volunteers. It’s as easy as letting them know to go to
www.missoulamarathon.org
and clicking on the Volunteer tab. That will take them to the volunteer registration page and they can go from there.
Thank you in advance for your continued support of the Missoula Marathon – the Number One Marathon In The U.S.
