Run Wild Missoula Executive Director: Sometimes You Just Gotta Grind It Out
I’d been trying to find inspiration for this month’s newsletter article, without a lot of success. I tried to look to nature – but it was hard to get inspired by the snow and cold that we’ve seen here at the end of February. I tried to look at what was going on with my own running – and that definitely didn’t get me overly inspired……….. too many recent runs on the treadmill and the Milwaukee Trail.

Then it came to me, right now it’s just about grinding it out. Shoveling and plowing snow over and over (and over and over). Going from one cloudy, gloomy day to the next. Struggling through miles on the treadmill or all bundled up and trying to avoid slipping – but, still continuing to put one foot in front of the other and getting it done.

Sometimes, grinding it out is the best that we can do. And, that’s okay. It can’t all be unicorns, rainbows, and flower filled meadows. There are times where we just have to put our head down and “get on with it.” As the saying goes, nobody ever said it would be easy. But, I was raised to not be afraid of buckling down and getting on with the work.

Training, especially marathon training, can be like that a lot of times. The cumulative fatigue from a long training cycle builds until every run seems to blend into the next. But those runs are what give you the endurance and strength to have a great performance on race day. It also prepares you to get through that point in the race where it gets uncomfortable and you begin to second guess your ability to finish. Knowing that you’ve been able to grind it out in your training can give you the confidence to stick with your pace and keep driving towards the finish.

What’s important is to not get overwhelmed by “the grind,” especially during a Montana winter. Rest assured that it won’t last forever. Spring is just around the corner - really, it is :-) The trails will clear up before we know it and we’ll again be able to spend plenty of time in our outdoor playground. Runs will flow like water when we’re not burdened by 5 layers of clothes and traction devices. And, trust me, as we get into the full-fledged season of runs and races you’ll forget all about the winter grind.

Until then, I’ll be dreaming of spring and grinding it out on the roads, tracks and trails.

Pi Day Fun Run: March 14th
Join us for a fun run that concludes with slices of pie! On Wednesday, March 14th at 6:00 PM, we will start at Run Wild Missoula (basement of Runner's Edge) and run/walk/run-walk 3.14 miles to celebrate the mathematical day.

Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th (3/14) around the world. Pi (Greek letter “π”) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant — the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14159.

Pi has been calculated to over one trillion digits beyond its decimal point. As an irrational and transcendental number, it will continue infinitely without repetition or pattern. While only a handful of digits are needed for typical calculations, Pi’s infinite nature makes it a fun challenge to memorize, and to computationally calculate more and more digits.

A route map will be posted on our Facebook event page and will be available the night of the event.
Galloway Half Marathon Training Class: March 4th
This 19-week run-walk-run class begins on Sunday, March 4th  and continues through July 8th; race day is July 15th.

Class meets on Sundays at 8:00 AM at the Run Wild Missoula office and then moves to The Loft on  March 18th.  Optional 45-minute buddy runs are held Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

The Galloway approach to training increases mileage gradually and builds to a race-distance training run before the goal event; the Missoula Half Marathon. The run-walk-run method, conservative training pace, and low total weekly mileage make this a great program for beginners, the injury-prone, and runners returning from time off.

Where are you from? What brought you to Missoula?
I was born and raised in Missoula and I love it here, so I am sure I will never leave!

When did you start running and why?
I began running when I was young and really started to get the competitive feeling once I reached high school. I ran track with my older brother and my motivation was to always try and beat him, especially in hurdles. Throughout high school and college, running was a vital part of my life, but after college it kind of slowed down. The training made me realize just how much I had missed it and I will continue to run because it is a fun social event that I enjoy taking part in. The training made me realize just how much I had missed it and I will continue to run because it is a fun social event that I enjoy taking part in.
