Be Better, Do Better
Like many of you, we as an organization have followed the #runwithmaud (Ahmaud Arbery) movement over the last couple of weeks. And, we have been evaluating how to comment on the situation within the context of Run Wild Missoula’s Mission and Core Values. (To see our mission and values, go
HERE
.)
One of our core values is the “Creation of a community of runners and walkers that encourages inclusion and acceptance of all ages and abilities”. Typically, most of us take that to mean something along the lines of “it doesn’t matter if you are 14 or 84, run a 5:00 mile or walk a 20:00 minute mile, you’re welcome here”. And, it does absolutely mean that. But, we think it should also mean something more.
As part of our Missoula running/walking/endurance community, inclusion and acceptance should also mean that you’re welcome regardless of your race; or, sexual orientation; or, religious beliefs; or, gender; or, disability.
Why should you only feel welcome in our club or safe when you recreate if you are a healthy, white, male. What about other genders? People of color? LGBTQ? Physical disabilities? Christian, Hindu or Agnostic? Really – why do any of these labels matter? In the end, we should strive to make labels fade away as we’re running side by side and entering the pain cave on the climb to the top of Jumbo. To make that happen, I challenge you to invite everyone to the party and to share our space.
Will there always be haters-that-hate? Probably. But if we in the outdoor, endurance community model good behavior, perhaps others will follow suit. Maybe someday love triumphs over hate and we don’t have to see another #runwithmaud.
On a related topic - For a discussion on racial issues within the running industry, listen to Episode # 197 of the BibRave Podcast – “Diversity, Equity & Inclusion with Ted Metellus”. Find it on Spotify

for a list of all places where you can find the BibRave Podcast. Ted is a V.P. with the New York Road Runners and is widely considered to be one of the “thought leaders” within the running industry. It’s a good listen during your next run.
As for me, I’ll do my part to be better member of society while out on the roads, tracks and trails.

Where is your favorite place to run in Missoula?
Luke:
Anywhere with Peyton, but I enjoy upper Blue Mountain. I have fond memories there, spent a lot of time working up for Hootenanny Relay and Elk Ramble there.
Peyton:
Blue Mountain. I did my first trail run there.
Do you know someone from our Run Wild Missoula community that we should get to know better?

Spotting A "Female" in the Mountains
by Sara Boughner
"As I walked into a local coffee shop, I was excited to meet up with a good friend who loves to trail run and has stories from several adventures around the world. She was going to tell me about her most recent exploration of the Snowcrest Mountains, a small but stunning mountain range southeast of Dillon, MT. Describing her trip, she recounted a specific run that she did solo, then talked about how she ran into a hunter afterward. The hunter, a male, told her that he was following her with his spotting scope, and thought to himself, “I believe that is a female!” He described how surprised he was to see a woman running by herself in the wilderness."

In recognition of National Trails Day, on Saturday, June 6th, Run Wild Missoula & Montana Trail Crew are encouraging you to help give back to our trails. As you recreate on Saturday, make an extra effort to clean up some Doggy Poo that was left behind. This may be one small action, but it can make a BIG difference!
It’s easy to participate in our On-Your-Own Plogging Event!!
Simply pick up
pre-bagged
Doggy Poo bags left on the side of the trail at places like Waterworks, Jumbo & the South Hills Spur as you are running, walking, or hiking.
Run Wild Missoula & Montana Trail Crew will provide garbage cans at the following trail heads:
- Orange Street (Waterworks/North Hills)
- Duncan Drive (Waterworks/North Hills)
- Cherry Street (Jumbo South)
- Barmeyer (South Hills Spur)
At the end of the day, we will pick up the garbage cans and dispose of the waste properly.
If you want gloves, Run Wild Missoula will have non-latex gloves available for pick up at the office on Thursday (6/4) and Friday (6/5) from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
This event is not limited to Missoula's Trails! We encourage anyone, anywhere, anytime to pick up some Doggy Poo along your local trails. But please make sure you properly dispose of all waste!!!
Be sure to share your clean-up efforts with us on Social Media by tagging @RunWildMissoula and @MontanaTrailCrew and using the hashtags #LaceEmUp and #NationalTrailsDay
