Run Wild Missoula Executive Director: What A Long Strange Trip It's Been
|
I think that the Grateful Dead would agree that its been a weird and wild last 6 weeks. There has been lots of bad news in that time; and, I suspect that there is even more to come. But, as in most times of darkness, there are always rays of light and silver linings. I'd like to think that by focusing on the positive, it helps to push us to be "the glass is half full" type of people. What are some of the good things that I've observed in these last 6 weeks?
- The next "running boom" created by those who have discovered how running and walking can become a regular part of their fitness routine .
- All those generous souls who took to sewing masks for our community
- The Howl For Missoula
- All the engagement that we've had from Missoula area runners in the Run Wild Missoula and Runner's Edge Strava Challenges
- The compassion and care demonstrated by the medical community in treating those afflicted with the COVID-19 illness
- The great work that RWM staff (Ashley & Elizabeth) did in pivoting our races, training classes and more from in-person to digital activities
- The number of people who complied with the Stay At Home order and helped to flatten the curve in Missoula and throughout Montana
Clearly this has been a challenging time for everyone. I'm convinced that at some point we are going to come out the other side. How can we get there? By being diligent in following directives, orders and best practices. By being positive and proactive. By being supportive and helpful to our friends, families and neighbors.
The better we are at being responsible in our behavior, the better that we as a community can manage the spread of the Coronavirus. And that will help us to minimize the time that it takes us to move through Phase One, Phase Two, and into Phase Three.
Looking forward to once again being able to see everyone out on the roads, tracks and trails. Until then - Stay Active, Stay Healthy, Stay Safe, and Stay Strong.

We have reviewed the Phase One "re-opening" orders as issued by Governor Bullock and the Missoula City-County Health Department. We've also had communications with the RWM Board of Directors, Health Department staff, Missoula Parks & Recreation staff and MTB Missoula staff. Based on those communications, Run Wild Missoula will continue with no in-person races, group runs, classes, events or activities through Phase One. For more information, click

Who is more competitive? Is there any friendly (or not so friendly) mother-daughter competition between the two of you?
Vicky:
We are a bit competitive, but it is all friendly. I love that Ashley is finding her own confidence and strength in this sport. The competition began with her trying to keep up with me and now I am just trying to keep her in site.
Ashley:
Things are all friendly….as long as I win!
Do you know someone from our Run Wild Missoula community that we should get to know better?

We all know, deep down, the best way to get better at running is simply: running. The more times you hit a pace or climb a hill the easier and more natural it feels. Running regularly results in improved cardiovascular fitness and can contribute to a lower body mass. Unfortunately (or fortunately for some), cardio and skinny jeans are not everything. Voluminous training, track-worthy workouts, and the genetic engineering of a racehorse mean less if your body moves like a poorly designed droid from the early Star Wars saga.
A runner who uses more energy to move at the same pace as another runner has a lower running economy, resulting in earlier fatigue and eventually a slowing in pace. Economy can be determined in a lab by measuring oxygen consumption--an essential ingredient for energy production--at any pace. But in real time, an improved running economy results in a lower level of perceived exertion at the same pace. Running just feels easier.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the guidelines of the CDC and local and state health officials, and the feedback from the permitting agencies (U.S. Forest Service and City of Missoula Parks & Recreation), we will not be able to conduct the 2020 Pengelly Double Dip and Bob Hayes Single Dip on Saturday, June 6th.
After carefully considering options and working with the U.S. Forest Service, Missoula Parks and Recreation, and the University of Montana, the 2020 races will be

to
Saturday, August 15th
. As runners ourselves, we understand the disappointment this will cause to our participants, as well as the impact this has on our sponsors.
Registration for the Double Dip and Single Dip will reopen to the public on Monday, May 4th at 8:00 AM Mountain Time.

Run Wild Missoula is challenging you to join a movement with us - a movement to inspire and encourage movement.
As runners and walkers, we know that regular exercise improves our physical & mental well-being. We have a unique opportunity to connect our passion for the sport with all of the non-runner’s (and walkers) in our lives. Let’s help them discover all of the great physical and mental benefits by helping them to remove any barriers to participation.
Our challenge to you:
Bring these non-runners into the world of running and walking - help inspire their first run, celebrate their accomplishments, “show” them the way, and teach them that a run is a run, regardless if it's 5 miles, 5 blocks, or 5 laps around the kitchen table.
Each week during the COVID-19 pandemic, we will be challenging you to share a piece of your running or walking journey to help inspire and encourage your family, friends and colleagues. Help them to Release Their Runner (or Walker)!
This week
we invite you to share with your followers your favorite tactics, apps, or tracking tools that help to keep you motivated!
