Run Wild Missoula Executive Director: Safety First
|
Safety is at the forefront of every race directors mind. Typically that includes a route that avoids vehicle conflicts, dealing with dehydration and skinned knees, and being sure that no one gets lost. In 2020, we also have to consider how to minimize the risk of transmission of the Coronavirus.
As you know, we will be returning to in-person events and activities this month with the Diamond Dash, our Fall Trail Sessions and our Beginner Running 101 Class. You may be wondering how we intend to provide safe environments for these in-person events.
First off, these will all be taking place in outdoor spaces - taking advantage of good air circulation and sufficient room to spread out (i.e. social distancing.)
The Trail Sessions will be limited to 10 participants (per session) plus no more than 2 leaders. The Beginner Running Class will be limited to 22 participants and 3 class leaders. These numbers are well below the 50 person limit allowed under the Governor's Directive and the Missoula City County Health Order. Plus, we've developed a set of risk mitigation measures for these classes/sessions. To view those measures, go HERE and select the appropriate class.
The Diamond Dash (and October's Missoula Mile) were a bit more of a challenge. With more than 50 participants, it was necessary to work with the Health Department to develop a set of risk mitigation protocols. This resulted in a 7-page document that covers everything from packet pickup to sanitation of the portable toilets. To see our public facing COVID-19 Guidelines, go HERE for the Diamond Dash and HERE for the Missoula Mile.
These two races will also take place at venues where we can control the access and flow of participants within the event space - Ogren Park at Allegiance Field for the Diamond Dash and the UM Track at Dornblaser Field for the Missoula Mile.
Of course, we can't completely eliminate all risks associated with taking part in in-person events. But, in following these highly structured protocols, we believe that we are providing safe outdoor opportunities for our members and for the Missoula running and walking community.
Looking forward to seeing everyone, live and in-person, out on Missoula's roads, tracks & trails!!

Where are you from? What brought you to Missoula?
I am a born and raised Missoulian. I guess you could say that the lumber industry and water-softening brought my dad and mom’s families to Missoula, respectively, but I’ve been here most of my life (minus a few adventures to the East coast and Taiwan).
