Judith Reiter, Chair of Precinct 78 in Richardson!
Judith Reiter, representing Precinct 78, was named Chair of the Month for April 2021. Judith is a teacher, sponsor of the Plano East Democratic Club, Deputy Voter Registrar, door knocker, texter, protester, sign deliverer and donor.

She comes from a line of activists, following in the footsteps of her mother and grandmother. Judith is also a fierce advocate for holding those responsible for the death of Marvin Scott accountable, and a constant source of deserved grief for County Judge Chris Hill.

Congratulations, Judith! The CCDP appreciates you!

Texas Republicans Showing Fracture Lines
The Texas Legislature still has plenty of big issues to address in its last month: electric outages, the budget and policing. At the same time, the Republican majority has its eye on issues that are dear to the conservative base: abortion, guns and elections.

This cannot possibly be as simple as it looks, but here’s what Texas Republicans appear to be telling you about themselves over the last week: Their party is fractured.
Texas Voting Restriction Bill Goes Behind Closed Doors
The House Friday gave final passage to a pared down version of Senate Bill 7, leaving out various far-reaching voting restrictions that have prompted widespread outcry from voting rights advocates, advocates for people with disabilities, and local officials in the state’s biggest counties. The legislation still contains some provisions opposed by those groups — including a prohibition on counties sending unsolicited applications to vote by mail.

Now the bill likely will be reshaped in conference committee with the Senate, largely out of public view.

Commissioner’s Court: The public comments during a recent Commissioner's Court session continue to be gold. The first speaker commented on the double standard of police behavior. During a recent protest for justice for Marvin Scott III, a large white man named David Godber threatened and assaulted some of the protesters. He was aggressive with a police officer, swatted a phone out of one woman’s hand, and swatted at another. He cocked his fist like he was going to hit someone and, to top it all off, was conceal-carrying. Read More.
City of McKinney Texas Official Seal
McKinney City Council: May is Building Safety Month, a proclamation that’s bittersweet since Rick Herzberger, head of the city building department, recently died of COVID-19. Despite the death of one of their own, only two council members (Scott Elliott and Angela Richardson-Woods) and the city manager wore masks during the council meeting. Sadly, both Elliot and Richardson-Woods are leaving the council.

Dr. Gere Feltus, a family physician, will take Elliot’s seat. Rainey Rogers said he’s looking forward to Dr. Feltus joining the council and wished her well as she juggles being a doctor and a mom. How odd that Rogers didn’t mention the work-family balance skills of any of the male candidates. Read More.
