J.E.R. CHILTON YMCA AT ROCKWALL

LUNCH & LEARN RECAP

"Taking Your Running Further"

On June 1, 2026, the J.E.R. Chilton YMCA at Rockwall welcomed members and guests for Taking Your Running Further, a Lunch & Learn presented by The Run House and Racquet and Jog. Featured speakers included Miranda Hyvl, RRCA Certified Coach and owner of The Run House, and Andy Hiles, Chief Operating Officer of Racquet and Jog.

Designed for runners, walkers, and anyone interested in becoming more active, the presentation explored how people of all fitness levels can improve their health, build consistency, and enjoy the benefits of movement through community and purposeful training. Miranda shared her personal running journey and discussed how The Run House was created to provide a welcoming place for runners and walkers to connect, train, recover, and support one another. She encouraged attendees to identify their personal "why," whether that is improving health, managing stress, building confidence, finding community, or training for an event.

A major focus of the discussion was creating realistic and sustainable fitness goals. Miranda emphasized the importance of consistency, gradual progression, and allowing time for recovery. Participants learned how strength training, cross-training, swimming, cycling, and YMCA fitness classes can complement running while helping prevent injuries. The group also discussed common running form mistakes, including excessive side-to-side arm movement, looking down while running, and carrying unnecessary tension in the shoulders and upper body.

Hydration and recovery were also highlighted, particularly as runners prepare for the Texas summer. Attendees learned the importance of hydrating before activity, incorporating electrolytes, and using recovery tools such as stretching, foam rolling, massage therapy, and compression techniques to support performance and overall wellness.

Andy Hiles provided insights into proper footwear selection and how shoe choice can impact comfort, performance, and injury prevention. Participants learned about gait analysis, pronation and supination, different categories of running shoes, and the importance of finding footwear that matches an individual's unique needs and movement patterns. He also shared practical tips for proper shoe fitting and explained why comfort remains one of the most important factors when selecting a shoe.

Throughout the presentation, both speakers emphasized the value of community, accountability, and support in helping people stay motivated and active. Whether preparing for a race, returning to exercise, or simply looking to maintain a healthy lifestyle, attendees left with practical strategies and resources to help them take the next step in their fitness journey.

Thank you to Miranda Hyvl, Andy Hiles, The Run House, and Racquet and Jog for sharing their expertise and helping inspire our YMCA community to continue moving, learning, and pursuing lifelong wellness!

KEY TAKEAWAYS

🎯 Find your why.

Whether your goal is improved health, stress relief, weight management, social connection, or training for an event, having a clear purpose can help keep you motivated and consistent.

🌟 Start where you are.

Focus on realistic, achievable goals that fit your current fitness level and lifestyle. Progress is personal, and consistency matters more than perfection.

📈 Build gradually.

For those new to running or returning after time away, completing a distance is often a better initial goal than focusing on speed or pace.

💪Strength training matters.

Running and walking should be supported by strength training, cross-training, and other forms of exercise to improve performance and reduce injury risk.

🧘 Recovery is part of training.

Rest days, stretching, foam rolling, compression therapy, hydration, and proper sleep all play important roles in helping the body recover and adapt.

💧Hydrate before you need it.

Effective hydration begins the day before activity, especially during the Texas summer. Electrolytes can help replace minerals lost through sweat.

🏃Good form improves efficiency.

Maintaining relaxed shoulders, proper posture, and efficient arm movement can help runners move more comfortably and reduce unnecessary strain.

🤝Community creates accountability.

Training with others can provide encouragement, motivation, friendship, and support that helps people stay committed to their goals.

👟The right shoes make a difference.

Proper footwear should be selected based on individual comfort, movement patterns, and needs. What works best for one person may not work best for another.

🌎Movement is for everyone.

Whether you're a walker, recreational runner, fitness enthusiast, or marathoner, there are benefits to staying active and opportunities to participate at every level.

❤️Focus on long-term health.

Sustainable habits, gradual progress, and consistency over time are more valuable than quick results or short-term intensity.
