Running direct levels by yourself. Is it doable?

One Person Field Crew for Direct Levels!

Today's technology is just awesome. So many things are much easier to do in today's world. The younger field crews have no idea just how good they have it.

I have run direct levels using a tripod to hold the rod, run back to the level make the reading, then move the tripod. Not the way to do things if you are in a hurry.

I ran across a deal on Amazon for a Laser Level package with everything you need to run direct levels by yourself. I just had to try it.

I collected Fast Static on my property corner (BC in Conc) for NGS NAD 83(2011) Horizontal & NAVD88 Vertical control that I used for a ground control point.

I then setup the Laser Level and got a rod reading on the BC for Vertical Control (NAVD88) to set the HI of the Laser Level.

I then measured the elevation on several centerline monuments that I used as ground control points for the GIS mapping mission with the Mavic Mini. The horizontal values were extracted from Google Earth for all visible brass caps and adjusted to the primary brass cap that Fast Static was collected on.

Using an electronic field book on my smart phone that is synced on the cloud is pretty cool as well.

Using a Mavic Mini, Google Earth Pro and direct level elevations is a quick and easy solution for GIS mapping.

Conclusion

This laser level works great for measuring elevations on ground control points that will give a much better vertical accuracy when the mapping mission is processed.

I was amazed at how far the laser level reached. There was a 0.04' flucuation at 270' range which I averaged.
