Project Update: Evaluating Stormwater Retrofit Potential to Reduce Flood Impacts and Improve Water Quality in Urban Coastal Plain Communities

The City of Greenville is situated on the flat coastal plain landscape of eastern North Carolina and experiences pervasive challenges with flooding and stormwater runoff. Although current regulations help to reduce the impacts of new urban development on flooding and water quality, many older areas of the City have no stormwater management facilities or use outdated systems such as dry detention basins, Dry detention basins are typically implemented to provide water quantity control and are generally not designed for stormwater pollutant removal.

CWPA Member Spotlight: In-Situ

Is your monitoring equipment ready for field season? A little routine prep can go a long way toward saving time in the field. Take a few minutes to read our spring redeployment guide and double check your equipment for the smoothest possible seasonal transition. Or give In-Situ’s latest customer story a read for a look at how algae management strategies in a local reservoir transformed a Colorado town’s drinking water supply.

CWP Staff Profile: Meet Adrienne Cizek

Adrienne Cizek is CWP's new Senior Water Resources Engineer.

How did you get started working on watersheds?

Growing up in a region of Wisconsin called “Lake Country,” I have always loved being around water. In college I became an engineer because it was an interesting blend of math and creativity. However, it was not until I was introduced to the ecological engineering field through my research on nature-base stormwater systems that I knew that I wanted to spend my career integrating human development and natural systems so that both could thrive.

What is your favorite part about working for the Center?

My favorite part about working at the Center is getting to work with and learn from my coworkers and clients who bring so many skills and experiences to each project.

At which store would you like to max-out your credit card?

Etsy. My favorite things to purchase are tropical edible plants for my yard, but I can find so many interesting things here and support small business at the same time.

What was your favorite TV show when growing up?

Shark Week. An intense 7-day experience each year from which I could not look away.

Which sea creature is your favorite?

Manatees. They are just so big and cute.

What is the nerdiest thing you do in your spare time?

Food Forest. I have converted our little ¼-acre yard to a food forest and can easily lose track of time taking care of the yard, planning next steps, learning details about specific plants, and finding fun recipes that use our produce. It is also a great way to meet people. Random people stop by all the time to ask questions or share their knowledge (and sometimes plants!).
