Seniors’ Advocate: Addressing the Complex Interconnected Needs of Seniors in Saskatchewan

The Canadian Association of Retired Persons (CARP) is advocating for establishing a Seniors Advocate Office in Saskatchewan. This office would help to address the needs of 20% of our population, the 200,000 seniors whose hard work and commitment to their fellow citizens and communities made this province a great place to live and work.

It is widely accepted that the number and complexity of health issues increase as we age and that there will be a great need for long-term care as our population ages, seniors are the fastest growing demographic in Canada. However, the issues faced by our seniors are much broader than healthcare and long-term care.

CARP is seeking your support in spreading the word on this important issue leading up to the provincial election and asks that citizens and municipal leaders of Saskatchewan question candidates on their government's willingness to commit to the creation of an independent Seniors Advocate.

You can find additional resources linked below with more information. Please contact Laura Ross Giroux at lrossgiroux@gmail.com if you have any questions.

Getting Your Animal Tested

Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD)

The Ministry of Environment offers free voluntary CWD testing for all hunters.

In order to obtain more reliable information about the presence of the disease in certain areas of the province, hunters are strongly urged to have mule deer and white-tailed deer from wildlife management zones 2W, 9, 10, 35, 37, 47, 50 and 55 tested for CWD.

Hunters anywhere in the province are able to test deer, elk, moose and caribou for CWD in order to help provide critical information on the presence and distribution of the disease in these species.

Fresh or frozen heads can be dropped off at select Ministry of Environment field offices, Parks offices or self-service drop-off locations, with results available in roughly six weeks.

Saskatchewan Firearms Office Encourages Firearms Safety This Hunting Season

When transporting your firearms, ensure they are not loaded, are kept out of sight, locked securely in a case, or otherwise rendered inoperable (using a trigger lock or cable, or the bolt is removed), and that they are stored separately from live ammunition. Do not leave firearms unattended in your vehicle, and if you must, conceal them and do so briefly while the vehicle is kept within eyesight.

Crop Report for the Period of September 17-23, 2024

Harvest was delayed across much of the province over the past week due to rainfall. Currently, producers are 79 per cent complete. This is still ahead of the five-year average of 75 per cent and the 10-year average of 69 per cent. Although moisture has helped replenish topsoil moisture conditions and green up pastures for fall grazing, it has also caused concerns for downgrading of crop quality in areas yet to be harvested. Producers in many regions are hopeful for drier conditions in the upcoming weeks to help with harvest progression.
