• CMS Approves TennCare III Amendment The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services approved a significant amendment to Tennessee’s Medicaid Waiver, TennCare III, aimed at enhancing healthcare access and support for TennCare members. For more information, click here.

• Mental Health in Rural Communities This toolkit provides models, resources, and best practices to support the development and implementation of mental health programs in rural communities. For more information, click here.

• Higher Risk of Melanoma-Related Deaths for Patients Residing in Rural Counties: A Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program Study This study analyzes the persistence of the rural mortality penalty related to melanoma cancer using data to examine disease characteristics, incidence, and mortality rates, with breakdowns by race/ethnicity, income, and rural versus urban location. • Tennessee Community Health Survey This TDH survey is intended for everyone who lives in Tennessee and is 18 years or older. It is available to take in English or Spanish. • 25 States at Risk of Hospital Closures Rural hospital closures picked up in 2023 and nearly all rural hospitals face continued risk of closing due to serious financial challenges, with some states facing critical conditions in the short term. Read more about how this affects Tennessee Rural Hospitals here.

• CMS’s New Resource of Health Equity-related Data The Office of Minority Health at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services offers a table of suggested definitions, standards, and stratification practices for nine health equity-related data elements. The resource can help providers, states, community organizations, researchers, and others collect and/or stratify data to align with CMS’s Framework for Health Equity. • New Data from the CDC on Preventable Premature Death The new study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is an extension of an earlier CDC study, which showed a higher percentage of early death from the five leading causes in rural counties compared with urban counties during 2010-2017.  View CDC’s rural health website and Rural Public Health At-a-Glance to find out what the CDC is doing to improve the health and well-being of rural communities.
