The Tennessee Academy of Family Physicians (TNAFP) is the medical specialty association with a membership of 2,500 family physicians, family medicine residents, and medical students throughout Tennessee. The family physician provides comprehensive, coordinated and continuing care to all members of the family and serves as the patient’s advocate in the changing health care system. In addition to providing continuing and comprehensive care, family physicians provide health maintenance and preventive services to each member of the family, regardless of sex, age or type of problem, be it biological, behavioral or social.
TNAFP exists to support and advocate for Tennessee family physicians as leaders and providers of quality, comprehensive, patient-centered medical care. Find out more about TNAFP here.

Fentanyl Training: Understanding the Danger Because fentanyl is so strong, people who make illicit drugs use fentanyl to make their drugs cheaper and more powerful. Improving Youth Behavioral Health Through School Based Strategies The COVID-19 pandemic has caused toxic stress impacting the mental and emotional health and well-being of youth. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data shows that 37.1% of high school students experienced poor mental health during the pandemic. COVID-19 stress could lead to future risk behaviors and adverse health outcomes requiring state government support. Sliding Fee Scale Guide for CAHs and RHCs In this guide, the HRSA-supported National Rural Health Resource Center presents an overview of how to develop a Sliding Fee Scale Discount Program for Critical Access Hospitals (CAHs) and Rural Health Clinics (RHCs). It also provides information on how sliding fee scale discount programs relate to Internal Revenue Code Section 501(r) compliance and participation in the National Health Service Corps.

HHS Distributing $1.75 Billion in Provider Relief Fund Payments The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services announced payments, distributed through HRSA, to 3,680 providers across the country. Since November 2021, HRSA has distributed approximately $13.5 billion from the fund to offset costs related to COVID-19.

Chartis Rural Hospital Data Each year at NRHA’s Policy Institute, the Chartis Center for Rural Health releases data about rural providers across the country. This map has links to this year’s state-specific reports on the impact federal policies have on rural health care providers and their patients. The Chartis data sets show the annual revenue loss, potential job loss, and potential GDP loss, for each provider based on each policy. Find that data here.

As Eating Disorders Spike During Pandemic, Rural Treatment Options Lag Highlights the challenges of accessing care for eating disorders in rural areas, with a focus on treatment access in Montana. Describes the barriers to opening treatment facilities in the state, including licensure and insurance issues. Notes the potential for telehealth to improve access to treatment for rural populations, but that cost and reimbursement issues also create barriers to care.

Dental Colleges Welcome Teledentistry as the Next Step in Expanding Health Care Access Describes advances in teledentistry and training programs to increase access to dental care in rural areas, noting that teledentistry can allow rural dentists to see more patients. Discusses a teledentistry simulation training program, a provider-to-provider teledentistry service, and a teledentistry student group at different dental colleges, demonstrating that telemedicine is a critical component of the future of dentistry.

America After 3PM Interactive Data Dashboard Provides information on afterschool programs such as demand, health benefits, and opportunities they offer to participants, based on data from the America After 3PM 2020 survey. Also provides a special report on afterschool and summer program demand in rural areas.

National Academy for State Health Policy Hospital Cost Tool Interactive tool providing information on how much hospitals spend on patient care services, how costs relate to the hospital charges, and actual prices paid by health plans. Presents data on a range of measures for hospital revenue, costs, profitability, and break-even points for over 4,600 hospitals nationwide between 2011 and 2019. Includes the ability to view and compare hospital financial metrics at the hospital, state, and health system levels
