Webinar: Connected Automated Vehicles Past, Present and Future
Date: June 25, 2018
Time: 10:00 am to 11:00 am MT/12:00 pm to 1:00 pm ET
Cost: $99 members/$129 non-members
Organization: American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE)

The first person to propose connected automated vehicles over 20 years ago shares the evolution of connected automated vehicles, where we are now and where we are heading. The convergence of the vehicle and roadside technologies has come together to a nexus where there will be incredible changes in the transportation paradigm. With the converging of connected vehicles, vehicle automation, and mobility on demand, we will see real changes in transportation patters in the future.

This webinar shows how the projections made over 20 years ago have come to pass and discuss the enabling technologies that made them happen. It discusses current work being done by the presenter in the major national connected vehicle pilots and vehicle automation projects. It also discusses work done with mobility on demand/first/last mile and how to address the public/private partnerships that are needed to allow them to work together. It discusses the roles DOTs will play in deploying infrastructure needed for these new systems. It discusses the automobile and technology provider's roles in these systems .

Webinar: Vision Zero
Date: June 26, 2018
Time: 11:00 am to 12:00 pm MT/1:00 pm to 2:00 pm ET
Cost: Free
Organization: Tribal Transportation Safety

The webinar will give and overview of the zero deaths approach, major national initiatives, and FHWA's commitment to eliminating deaths and serious injuries on all roadways. It will also focus on local Vision Zero efforts; therefore will introduce the work of the Vision Zero Network - a nonprofit organization promoting the goal of Vision Zero - zero traffic deaths and severe injuries among all road users.  Vision Zero can help bring focus and strategy to a transportation safety plan.

The zero deaths approach was first adopted in Sweden in 1997 as "Vision Zero" and since then has spread around the world.  Its vision is that even one traffic-related death is unacceptable.  The approach has proven successful and has been adopted widely in the United States at the national, state, and local levels. It applies the Safe Systems principles to prioritize safety for all road users across our transportation system.

Webinar: So Unsafe, It Seems Safe: Reassessing Safety Via Perceived Risk
Date: July 10, 2018
Time: 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm MT/3:00 pm to 4:30 pm ET
Cost: $149 members/$199 non-members
Organization: Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE)

Traffic safety is a primary barrier for folks who wish to walk or bike. The traditional approach to combating such traffic safety issues consists of looking for crashes, injuries, or fatalities. However, that is a reactive approach, only accounting for the folks that are already walking or biking and the places that they are doing so. How would we account for people that have determined that the system is too unsafe to use in the first place? How would we identify the places where trips are suppressed - precisely because they are so unsafe - before they occur?

By using safety perceptions and suppressed trips, this webinar will explore ways of identifying such people and places. Two case studies examine children in Denver, Colorado and California. Instead of the traditional reactive approach of reducing crashes, the goal of this webinar is to develop a proactive method of enabling as many people to safely walk and bike as possible.

APBP is hosting a webinar to share information about a new guide and tech sheets promoting the use of countermeasures for uncontrolled pedestrian crossing locations. The "Guide for Improving Pedestrian Safety at Uncontrolled Crossing Locations" follows a six-step process and provides tools that help agencies select countermeasures for uncontrolled crossing locations based on roadway characteristics and pedestrian safety issues. This guide was developed as part of the FHWA Every Day Counts - Safe Transportation for Every Pedestrian (STEP) program. In addition to this new guide, the STEP program released a series of new tech sheets highlighting the safety benefits of the STEP countermeasures. The tech sheets provide conceptual visualizations, best practices for installation, and cost considerations for each of the countermeasures.

The new STEP guide and tech sheets are posted to the program website: https://www.fhwa.dot.gov/innovation/everydaycounts/edc_4/step.cfm

Training: Work Zone Safety Awareness Workshop
Date: September 6, 2018
Location: Piscataway, NJ
Organization: Rutgers Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation

The Work Zone Safety Awareness Program is offered to participants who require an overview of working safely in the roadway. As new or veteran employees enter or re-enter the construction and public works profession, they are frequently required to set up short-term work zones or are assigned to long-term projects. There are no allowances for errors when working next to traffic, so it is important for personnel to have a solid understanding of work zone safety compliance with the national MUTCD standards. Also, the roles of workers and enforcement personnel at work sites, differences between NJDOT and local projects, and legal responsibilities in work zones will be addressed during this program.

Training: 2018 Positive Culture Framework Training
Date: September 25-27, 2018
Location: Savannah, GA
Organization: Center for Health and Safety Culture

The  Positive Culture Framework (PCF) is an approach based on our latest research about improving health and safety in our communities and organizations. The PCF seeks to cultivate health and safety. We intentionally use the word "cultivate" because the framework builds on shared values, beliefs, and attitudes that already exist in a culture to promote health and safety. The PCF builds on the recognition that the solutions are in the community. For more information on our Positive Culture Framework, visit the webpage.

This 2.5-day Positive Culture Framework (PCF) Training will provide a foundation for efforts to improve health and safety that address a wide variety of issues including (but not limited to) substance abuse, traffic safety, and violence prevention. The PCF Training will cover our cultural transformation process and initiate the development of skills in three critical areas: leadership, communication, and the integration of effective strategies. Participants will leave with an understanding of how culture influences behavior, how we can cultivate cultural transformation, and specific next steps for implementing this process for transforming culture to achieve community health and safety goals.
