Webinar: Sustainable Urban Traffic Management Using Advanced Technologies
Date: May 26, 2016
Time: 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm ET
Cost: Free
Organization: USDOT, ITS Joint Program Office (JPO)

This webinar will feature two student presentations from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and one from Dr. Eleni Christofa. Yashar Farid and Farnoush Khaligi are working with Dr. Eleni Christofa in the department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and will each present recently completed research. The unifying theme is identification of ways to manage traffic more efficiently, while improving person mobility and minimizing emissions at signalized intersections.

The first presentation will focus on the evaluation of various transit preferential treatments (TPTs). These TPTs include dedicated bus lanes, queue jumper lanes, and transit signal priority strategies on person delay and person discharge flow at signalized intersections. Analytical models are developed that allow for such a person-based evaluation of alternative TPTs when considered individually and in combination. Their results are compared with outcomes from microsimulation tests.

The second presentation will describe a real-time signal control system to minimize emissions of both cars and buses at signalized intersections for undersaturated traffic conditions. Information on vehicle activity is used along with the Vehicle Specific Power (VSP) approach. It provides emission rates per time spent in each operating mode (i.e., acceleration, deceleration, idling, and cruising) to estimate the total emissions per cycle.

Finally, the webinar will conclude with a brief description of a real-time signal control strategy to avoid the occurrence of spill backs using Connected Vehicle (CV) data to detect such occurrences. This presentation will discuss the two methods used to detect queue spill backs using CV data and the minimum penetration rate thresholds of CV equipped vehicles for which the proposed methods can accurately detect potential queue spill backs. The performance of the signal control strategy under various penetration rates will also be discussed.

Webinar: usRAP: An Innovation in Data Driven Safety Analysis
Date: June 14, 2016
Time: 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm ET
Cost: Free
Organization: National Center for Rural Road Safety, Roadway Safety Foundation, MRI Global

Join the Roadway Safety Foundation and MRI Global for an introduction to the U.S. Road Assessment Program, an innovative and cost-effective tool for safety investment planning that can be used on any road network. Unlike traditional safety analysis tools that require multiyear robust crash data, usRAP uses coding of video logs to star-rate roads for safety, and generate a safety investment plan to guide further engineering studies and investment priorities. Though it can be applied anywhere, usRAP is especially suited for use in rural areas, where local road ownership is high, and vehicle-miles travelled may be too low to yield actionable crash data. Additionally, the Federal Highway Administration recognizes the program as a viable tool for data-driven safety analysis as promoted by Every Day Counts 3. In this webinar, the program's lead sponsors and technical experts will introduce usRAP's core protocols, and explore their application to improving safety on rural highways.

Training: Road Safety 365 - A Safety Workshop for Local Governments
Date: May 25, 2016
Location: Charlottesville, VA
Organization: University of Virginia, Center for Transportation Studies

Rural roadways face unique safety challenges. Rural crashes are more likely to be at higher speeds and involved unrestrained occupants, and are therefore more severe than urban crashes.  Emergency response times are longer.  Hazards such as trees, utility poles and steep slopes are often close to the roadway.  In addition, budgets are severely limited and there may be a lack of awareness of safety issues.

This workshop, aimed at local road agencies, demonstrates how construction and maintenance activities impact roadway safety and encourages development of a safety mindset. Practical guidance is provided on improving road safety that is specifically geared to the day-to-day activities and project development processes of local/rural road agencies.  Attendees will learn how to identify specific road safety problems and to identify practical, low-cost countermeasures to address the problems, both in existing roads and during project development.  Attendees will also be able to identify and access appropriate road safety information and use it effectively.

However, it is the in-person meetings that take place throughout the year that provide the most effective and efficient way for key stakeholders-government officials, enforcement and industry-to collaborate and affect meaningful changes to the overall culture of transportation safety throughout Canada, Mexico and the United States. That's exactly why attending the CVSA Annual Conference & Exhibition is so important.

The Alliance's premier annual event includes roll-up-your-sleeve meetings of CVSA's elected leadership, technical working committees, program committees and task forces. The benefits of the face-to-face interaction are priceless-participants get down to business, discuss, examine, cooperate and make tremendous strides in furthering CVSA's mission. Please join your colleagues at year's most important gathering of the CMV safety and security community in Buffalo. Together, we make a difference and save lives.
