Webinar: Protected Bikeway Design: Maintenance

There are numerous design guides that have been produced in the past decade for the design of bicycle infrastructure. The most recent guidance includes substantially more information about protected bike lanes due to the strength of their demonstrated outcomes. These facilities, also referred to as separated bike lanes and cycle tracks, have been shown to improve safety, user comfort, operations, equity, and mode share.
With the additional guidance and approvals from authorizing agencies, growth in protected bike lane miles/kilometres has been significant. However, questions about the specific design and operational details that many of the guides do not address requires additional design guidance and research before these designs are widely adopted. The ITE Protected Bike Lane Lecture Series will address these gaps related to 5 priority areas: Safety Performance, Mid-Block Design & Operation, Intersection Design & Operation, Maintenance, and Implementation. The Lecture Series will result in the development of the ITE Practitioners Guide.
While much of the application of protected bike lanes has been in urban areas, we will also include guidance for suburban contexts.
This fifth lecture is focused on the Maintenance of Protected Bikeways. The Maintenance lecture will include maintenance strategies and design considerations to support operation and use of protected bikeways in winter. The lecture will also discuss street sweeping equipment requirements.

Webinar: Low-Volume Roads

The design, maintenance, and operation of low volume rural roads poses a challenge to many local highway agencies, particularly when considering the financial constraints involved in also needing to address the more heavily traveled roadways within the same jurisdiction. It is estimated that there are 2.5 million miles of low volume public roads in the U.S., under the responsibility of counties, townships, tribal lands, the U.S. Forest Service and others.
When addressing low volume road issues, it is often economically impractical to apply the same design or operations treatments that would otherwise be suggested on a high volume road, particularly when most motorists on these roads tend to be familiar with the roadway and its geometrics. For this reason, organizations such as the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), and the U.S. Forest Service have developed policies and guidelines that recognize the need for more flexible design standards and operational practices for low volume roads.
This webinar will provide an overview of the various design policies and guidelines that can be considered for the construction, reconstruction, maintenance and operation of low volume roads. As a part of this discussion, the differing traffic volume thresholds used when applying these guidelines will be described, as well as the influence of constraints that involve right-of-way, topography, and environmental issues. Maintenance and operations issues concerning paved versus unpaved roads, and use of traffic signing and other traffic control devices will be included.
Key management issues to be considered when developing policies for low volume roads will also be discussed. Low volume road safety concerns and potential low cost counter-measures will be covered, particularly in light of the difficulty involved in statistically assessing sparse crash data.

Training: Work Zone Safety Awareness Workshop

Training: Design and Operations of Separated Bike Lanes and Protected Intersections

Separated bicycle lanes (also known as cycle tracks or protected bicycle lanes) are exclusive facilities for bicyclists that are separated from motor vehicle traffic and pedestrians. Separated bicycle lanes are a fixture of bicycle networks in many countries with high rates of cycling, and interest in and construction of separated bicycle lanes is growing in Minnesota and across the country.
The release of the FHWA's Separated Bike Lane Planning and Design Guide provides design guidance but also allows for flexibility in design that would benefit from additional discussion. Training: Traffic Incident Management Training for Emergency Responders

Three vehicle crashes involving injuries occur every minute in the United States putting nearly 39,000 incident responders in harm's way daily. Disruption and congestion from these incidents can increase the likelihood of secondary crashes, cause delays, and increase driver frustration. The longer responders remain on the scene, the greater the risk they, and the traveling public, face. Correct traffic incident management (TIM) focuses on responding in a way that protects motorists and emergency personnel while minimizing negative effects on traffic. TIM practices include detecting, verifying, and responding to incidents; clearing the incident scene; and restoring traffic flow.
Using a multi-discipline approach, first responders in New Jersey will learn how to operate more efficiently and act collectively. The training covers topics including TIM guidelines, fundamentals, and terminology; notifications and scene size up; scene safety and risk management; traffic management; special circumstances; clearance; and termination.
This course is open to all traffic-incident first responders including personnel in law enforcement, fire fighting, emergency medical services (EMS), public safety, public works, towing and recovery, and hazardous materials (HAZMAT).
