Traffic Safety Weeks

New
Event: Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month
Date: May 1-31, 2016
Organization: National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)

Motorcyclists have all the same rights and privileges as any motor vehicle driver on the roadway. During Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month in May - and during the rest of the year - drivers of all other vehicles and all road users are reminded to safely "share the road" with motorcyclists, and to be extra alert to help keep motorcyclists safe.

Event: Cinco de Mayo Drunk Driving Prevention
Date: May 5, 2016
Organization: National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)

Cinco de Mayo has become a big night out for many, particularly among young adults. But it is also a very dangerous night out because of alcohol-impaired drivers. Those celebrating should be sure to designate their sober driver in advance - before the festivities begin.

Event: National Seat Belt Enforcement Mobilization
Date: May 23 - June 5, 2016
Organization: National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)

NHTSA has prepared this Products for Enforcement Action Kit (PEAK) to help you alert the public to prepare for maximum high-visibility seat belt enforcement.

Statistics show that passenger vehicle occupants are buckling up more during the day, but not enough at night. This mobilization is created to crackdown on violators 24-7, but a strong enforcement effort is urged between the nighttime hours of 6 PM and 5:59 AM due to the significant number of violators and fatal crashes during this time.

Webinar: Evaluation of Low-Cost Traffic Calming for Small Rural Communities
Date: April 19, 2016
Time: 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm ET
Cost: Free
Organization: University of Minnesota Roadway Safety Institute

Many rural communities have developed around highways or major county roads. As a result, the main street through these communities is often part of a high-speed rural highway. Highways and county roads are characterized by high speeds outside the city limits; they then transition into a reduced-speed section through the rural community. Consequently, drivers passing through the community often enter at high speeds and maintain those speeds as they travel through the community. Traffic calming in small rural communities along major roadways is common in Europe, but the United States does not have experience applying traffic-calming measures outside of major urban areas.
The presentation will provide an overview of a project that evaluated traffic-calming treatments on major roads through small Iowa communities using either single-measure, low-cost treatments or gateway treatments. The presenters will discuss how the low-cost treatments were implemented and evaluated in five rural Iowa communities.

Training: Work Zone Safety Awareness Workshop
Date: May 13, 2016
Location: Piscataway, NJ
Organization: Rutgers Center for Advanced Infrastructure and  Transportation

The Work Zone Safety Awareness Program is offered to participants who require an overview of working safely in the roadway. As new or veteran employees enter or re-enter the construction and public works profession, they are frequently required to set up short-term work zones or are assigned to long-term projects. There are no allowances for errors when working next to traffic, so it is important for personnel to have a solid understanding of work zone safety compliance with the national MUTCD standards. Also, the roles of workers and enforcement personnel at work sites, differences between NJDOT and local projects, and legal responsibilities in work zones will be addressed during this program.

Training: Road Safety 365 - A Safety Workshop for Local Governments
Date: May 25, 2016
Location: Charlottesville, VA
Organization: University of Virginia, Center for Transportation Studies

Rural roadways face unique safety challenges. Rural crashes are more likely to be at higher speeds and involved unrestrained occupants, and are therefore more severe than urban crashes.  Emergency response times are longer.  Hazards such as trees, utility poles and steep slopes are often close to the roadway.  In addition, budgets are severely limited and there may be a lack of awareness of safety issues.

This workshop, aimed at local road agencies, demonstrates how construction and maintenance activities impact roadway safety and encourages development of a safety mindset. Practical guidance is provided on improving road safety that is specifically geared to the day-to-day activities and project development processes of local/rural road agencies.  Attendees will learn how to identify specific road safety problems and to identify practical, low-cost countermeasures to address the problems, both in existing roads and during project development.  Attendees will also be able to identify and access appropriate road safety information and use it effectively.

Conference: National Working Summit on Transportation in Rural America
Date: September 7-9, 2016
Location: Denver, CO
Organization: National Center for Rural Road Safety

Transportation moves rural America. Rural communities need safe, viable roads and multi-modal systems to move people from place to place; and to move goods and services to markets, often across long distances. Without reliable and well-maintained transportation networks through rural areas, visitors cannot enjoy iconic travel and recreation opportunities; and businesses cannot ensure coast-to-coast delivery of goods.

This summit is all-inclusive, bringing together key leaders and grassroots stakeholders to articulate important safety and transportation issues that impact quality of life and economic prosperity in rural areas. It will also identify collaborative opportunities to advocate for and implement initiatives that advance the deployment of a safe, efficient, seamless, and financially sustainable rural transportation network.

Save the date so you do not miss out on this informative working summit. Registration will open for this event soon, please check the website below for more information.

Conference: CVSA Annual Conference and Exhibition
Date: September 18-22, 2016
Location: Little Rock. AR
Organization: Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA)

The Alliance provides the opportunities and framework for its members to work together to advance its mission to achieve quality, uniformity and consistency in commercial motor vehicle safety and security all across North America, all year long. However, it is the in-person meetings that take place throughout the year that provide the most effective and efficient way for key stakeholders-government officials, enforcement and industry-to collaborate and affect meaningful changes to the overall culture of transportation safety throughout Canada, Mexico and the United States. That's exactly why attending the CVSA Annual Conference & Exhibition is so important.

The Alliance's premier annual event includes roll-up-your-sleeve meetings of CVSA's elected leadership, technical working committees, program committees and task forces. The benefits of the face-to-face interaction are priceless-participants get down to business, discuss, examine, cooperate and make tremendous strides in furthering CVSA's mission. Please join your colleagues at year's most important gathering of the CMV safety and security community in Buffalo. Together, we make a difference and save lives.
