Event: Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

Motorcyclists have all the same rights and privileges as any motor vehicle driver on the roadway. During Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month in May - and during the rest of the year - drivers of all other vehicles and all road users are reminded to safely "share the road" with motorcyclists, and to be extra alert to help keep motorcyclists safe.

Event: National Seat Belt Enforcement Mobilization

NHTSA has prepared this Products for Enforcement Action Kit (PEAK) to help you alert the public to prepare for maximum high-visibility seat belt enforcement.

Statistics show that passenger vehicle occupants are buckling up more during the day, but not enough at night. This mobilization is created to crackdown on violators 24-7, but a strong enforcement effort is urged between the nighttime hours of 6 PM and 5:59 AM due to the significant number of violators and fatal crashes during this time.

Webinar: Evaluation of Low-Cost Traffic Calming for Small Rural Communities

Many rural communities have developed around highways or major county roads. As a result, the main street through these communities is often part of a high-speed rural highway. Highways and county roads are characterized by high speeds outside the city limits; they then transition into a reduced-speed section through the rural community. Consequently, drivers passing through the community often enter at high speeds and maintain those speeds as they travel through the community. Traffic calming in small rural communities along major roadways is common in Europe, but the United States does not have experience applying traffic-calming measures outside of major urban areas. 
The presentation will provide an overview of a project that evaluated traffic-calming treatments on major roads through small Iowa communities using either single-measure, low-cost treatments or gateway treatments. The presenters will discuss how the low-cost treatments were implemented and evaluated in five rural Iowa communities.

This course provides tools for transit vehicle operators to better respond to emergency situations as they begin to unfold. The morning session provides basic awareness to help identify emergencies, an orientation to emergency equipment on the vehicle, and a review of seven steps for crisis management during an emergency. The afternoon session covers all-hazards awareness and preparedness for transit employees. It is designed to help transit employees develop the observation, communication, and response skills needed to address all-hazards incidents while ensuring their own safety and that of their customers. Participants will learn the importance of taking an all-hazards approach to transit incidents and events, understand their responsibilities and priorities during such incidents and events, learn to distinguish between notice and no-notice situations, and learn to select appropriate response and reporting strategies for all-hazards incidents and events.

Training: Positive Culture Framework

The Center for Health and Safety Culture at Montana State University invites you to attend a newly developed training on our updated approach which is based on the latest research and builds on the Positive Community Norms framework. The framework embraces a cultural approach, is grounded in the latest science, and includes positive norms in improving health and safety.

Training: Work Zone Safety Awareness Workshop

The Work Zone Safety Awareness Program is offered to participants who require an overview of working safely in the roadway. As new or veteran employees enter or re-enter the construction and public works profession, they are frequently required to set up short-term work zones or are assigned to long-term projects. There are no allowances for errors when working next to traffic, so it is important for personnel to have a solid understanding of work zone safety compliance with the national MUTCD standards. Also, the roles of workers and enforcement personnel at work sites, differences between NJDOT and local projects, and legal responsibilities in work zones will be addressed during this program.

Training: Roadside Safety Design

Training: Road Safety 365 - A Safety Workshop for Local Governments

Rural roadways face unique safety challenges. Rural crashes are more likely to be at higher speeds and involved unrestrained occupants, and are therefore more severe than urban crashes.  Emergency response times are longer.  Hazards such as trees, utility poles and steep slopes are often close to the roadway.  In addition, budgets are severely limited and there may be a lack of awareness of safety issues.

This workshop, aimed at local road agencies, demonstrates how construction and maintenance activities impact roadway safety and encourages development of a safety mindset. Practical guidance is provided on improving road safety that is specifically geared to the day-to-day activities and project development processes of local/rural road agencies.  Attendees will learn how to identify specific road safety problems and to identify practical, low-cost countermeasures to address the problems, both in existing roads and during project development.  Attendees will also be able to identify and access appropriate road safety information and use it effectively.

Training: Road Safety 365 - A Safety Workshop for Local Governments

This course instructed by Juan M. Morales, P.E. is designed to provide local and rural agencies with practical and effective ways to mainstream safety solutions into their day-to-day activities and project development process. This one-day workshop focuses on processes for incorporating safety into all aspects of local and rural projects, and on making safety a priority through inclusion in the traditional decision-making process - 365 days a year. The course stresses the importance of road safety, and illustrates how it can be integrated into rural/local transportation project development at all stages: planning, design, construction, implementation, operations, and maintenance. Through practical exercises and facilitator-led discussions, the emphasis is on operations and maintenance to reflect the predominant, day-to-day responsibilities of rural/local transportation agencies. The benefits and potential cost savings of safety initiatives are shown using examples from rural/local agencies

The workshop audience ranges from decision-makers to road crews. It is aimed primarily at local and rural road and public works supervisors. Others who would benefit include: elected officials, public safety advocates, State DOT personnel, law enforcement, consultants, regional and rural development organizations, municipal associations.

Training: Low-Cost Roadway Safety Improvements

This workshop shows participants ways to reduce fatalities and injuries caused by road departures and collisions with fixed objects, as well as collision at rural intersections.  The course also addresses measures to improve pedestrian safety.  Included are examples of low-cost maintenance and safety improvements on roads and the historical differences between state road systems and local road systems.

Training: School Crossing Design and Safety Analysis
Date: July 11, 2016

The School Crossing Design Course instructed by Dane Ismart will cover the recommended guidelines for school crossings. Various issues such as determining the school area boundaries, signing and markings for school crossing areas, and design criteria will be covered. Requirements and guidelines as covered by the Maryland MUTCD will be reviewed as part of the class. How to select treatments such as potential signalization, crossing guards, pedestrian cross walks, coverage, school speed zones and speed monitoring, location of traffic control devices, and warrants will be presented to the class. The Safe Routes to School program will be reviewed. Sources for information and school crossing information will be given to the class as well as innovative school treatments from other states. A class exercise will be conducted by the participants to demonstrate the application of the procedures and design principles for implementing school crossing treatments.

Training: NW TTAP Summer Tribal Planning Institute: Tribal Planning
Date: July 11-15, 2016

Organization: Northwest Tribal Technical Assistance Program, Eastern Washington University
 
This five-day workshop will describe the history, structures and powers of tribal government within tribal sovereignty for tribal planning. It will include an overview of land use planning based on a Comprehensive Plan that covers the natural environment, land use, housing and community facilities, economic development, and transportation as elements of the plan. The class will also cover the unique processes of Tribal Specific Comprehensive Plans that incorporate elements of tribal history, tribal language and culture; tribal lands; tribal architecture and housing; land use patterns, tribal health and wellness; tribal economic and community development, and their significance in planning for contemporary and future communities. The course will include an assessment of contemporary tribal planning practices for sustainable tribal futures through a review of tribal plans and best practices.
 
The model for tribal planning is the development of tribal (or village) specific planning as a unique and dynamic process which uses some of the same tools of non-tribal planning but expands from a base of tribal sovereignty.

New Jersey's 17th Annual Work Zone Safety Conference will promote work zone safety awareness through presentations and panel discussions with labor, industry, and law enforcement perspectives, new technologies, best practices, and much more. The New Jersey Work Zone Safety Excellence Awards will be presented in recognition of those that have demonstrated effective temporary traffic control in planned work zones on New Jersey roadways. These awards showcases the efforts of individuals, companies, and roadway agencies to inspire all in the area of work zone safety.

Hosted by the New Jersey Local Technical Assistance Program (NJ LTAP) at Rutgers Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation (CAIT) and the New Jersey Work Zone Safety Partnership (NJWZSP). The NJWZSP is an ad hoc committee with the primary goal of promoting work zone safety education and awareness to reduce the number of workers and road users being injured or killed in work zones.
