Congratulations to Les Miller!
2018 Newell Hillis Long Award Winner
Each year the Marching Hundred Alumni Band honors one of its own for dedicated service to the Marching Hundred as well as promoting instrumental music and Marching Band in general.
Les began his love of Marching Band at Miami East High School, in Casstown, Ohio, playing trumpet, tuba, french horn, trombone, and serving as drum major. He attended Indiana University and was a Marching Hundred member from 1971 – 1976. Les was in the Basketball Band that lead the Men’s Basketball Hoosiers to a NCAA Championship in 1976. (We actually think a lot of the credit for the successful season goes to the Les and the Basketball Band.)
After graduation Les taught Music at Southern Wells School Corporation, served as Director of Bands at Muncie Southside High School from 1978-1983 and Connersville High School from 1983-2008. Under Les's direction these band programs consistently placed high among the competition as well as receiving first division or high second division ratings at all district and state marching and concert contests. Les continues to be active in community bands and serves on the Marching Hundred Alumni Council. Thank you, Les, for your tremendous dedication to the Marching Hundred and for some fantastic trombone playing at Homecoming!
