2020 Year End Update

A message from Ruthman Companies Vice President and Owner, Thomas G. Ruthman
As we begin to look forward to the New Year, it is a good time for reflection. We certainly have learned a lot this year having faced unprecedented challenges and uncertainty.

We started this year navigating through a trade war with China. New Tariffs were implemented to combat a rising trade deficit. Meanwhile, we opened a new facility in Shanghai, increasing our footprint in China, as well as adding new product development and testing capabilities.

Beginning this year, we welcomed new regional sales leadership to help manage our growing distributor and OEM network. At our annual managers meeting held in the newly opened corporate headquarters in West Chester, Ohio, we set exciting goals to strengthen our position in a booming economy.

By the end of January news began to spread of a new virus outbreak in Wuhan, China. By February travel was being restricted. In March the stock market crashed and stay at home orders were beginning to be implemented.

It was during this time that we began to rise to the challenge. We committed ourselves to weather this storm and protect our employees. We kept our business open and our people held onto their jobs. Our new goal was set. Our focus was on the idea that once this is past, and we look back at ourselves, what is it that we wish to see? We were resolved to be the best of ourselves.

During the spring we adapted to new ways to be of service. We began to have virtual meetings and developed online training courses for our distributors. This summer, as the virus continued its spread, we attended our first virtual trade show.

This fall, we pushed ahead with the launch of a new pump brand, RAE Pumps, which we will continue to grow with new pump offerings in the coming year. The development of the RAE brand has set a new standard for our visual representation which will serve as a template as we upgrade the marketing assets across all our divisions.

We celebrated Thanksgiving on Zoom or at smaller family gatherings. And now, as Christmas approaches, we begin to look towards the new year.

We look to 2021 with hope. As I write this, the FDA has approved a vaccine which will begin to be administered this month and is anticipated to be widely available in late spring. China, Russia, and Germany also have vaccines. England has already administered its first dose to a civilian.

We are going to emerge stronger and better than ever. We will because we stay together. We are united. We care for and support one another. We protect each other. It is by this dedication to our work and to one another that we will continue to grow and, regardless of the challenges ahead, we will persevere!

I wish each of you a blessed and joyful holiday. Stay safe and be mindful. Let’s transition into the new year with renewed enthusiasm and optimism. We have much to be proud of and much for which to be grateful!
Engineering Story: More Ruthman Pumps Going In at FCA Chrysler Plants
Great Lakes Pumps sells Process Systems VTPs for Water Test Booths

As a diverse group of pump manufacturing companies, we have the ability to cover virtually any pump process required across a manufacturing plant. Such is the case with two FCA Chrysler plants under construction in Michigan. Our division Gusher supplied the self-primers for the paint systems at both plants back in April, and now 20 Vertical Turbine Pumps from our Process Systems, Inc. division have been installed on the water test booths at both the Jeep plant at Mack Ave in Detroit, Michigan and the Warren, Michigan truck plant.

RAE Pumps Launched
By the people who know pumps
Ruthman Companies has built its reputation on its custom-engineered pumps for challenging applications. But we know that sometimes, you just need a reliable, competitively-priced pump that’s easy to order and delivered quickly. That’s why we’ve created RAE Pumps.

A number of existing pumps have been rebranded into this dedicated product line, with plans to expand to include additional stock pumps models in the future.

With the brand, we’ve launched a dedicated website at www.RAEPumps.com. The new website provides detailed product specifications for each model and online ordering capabilities.

Clyde Caldwell, who has been managing these pump lines for Gusher for several years, will be heading up the new line as Brand Manager.

Engineering Story: Gusher Pump Eliminates Parts Washer Repair Headaches
OTP helps engine remanufacturing plant keep process running smoothly
When one of three parts washers at a large engine remanufacturing plant kept going down for repairs, plant engineering staff looked at what was different between their two reliable machines and the problem one.

The difference? The pumps.

The two continuously running machines ran on Gusher Pumps.

Engineering Story: Gusher Pumps Surpass Performance Specs
Pumps passed stringent testing for nuclear application with flying colors
If there’s any application where performance is critical, it’s in a nuclear power plant. From the reactors on down, each piece of equipment plays a role in the plant’s safe operation.

When main power goes down, the backup generators must reliably come on and take over. After extensive testing, an order of Gusher SC Series pumps has been cleared for use on a plant’s emergency diesel power generators.

Training Library Expanded
We've added the August Valves 101: Applications, Selection and Sizing Considerations of Guided Piston Valves presentation to our Ruthman Companies Training Library. This session focuses on hydraulic valve principals and selection.

Quick Pix
This issue's Quick Pix come to us from BSM Pump Corp.

At left are two of seven Special Motor Driven Units created for an OEM of mining equipment in Australia. The BSM Model 2SA 1/2 HP 950 RPM pumps are preforming well 'down under' at an operating altitude of 6,700 feet.
Above, part of a special order of 125 pumps bound for a canning application are ready to ship. The order was placed through BSM distributor, Anderson Process. BSM 3S model foot mounted pumps were outfitted with Chicago Rawhide seals, Duraplate-coated gears and shafts, and outboard bearings to guard against leaks and to handle the viscous fluid being pumped in this application.
