News from Across the Ruthman Companies

Welcome to The Ruthman Reporter, bringing you news and projects from Ruthman divisions around the globe.

Celebrating 100 Years Since Inventing the World's First Coolant Pump

2024 was a key year in the history of our flagship Gusher Pumps brand. It marks 100 years since company founder Alois Ruthman invented the first sealless centrifugal pump. This pioneering pump gave birth to both the Gusher brand name and the now industry-standard term 'coolant pump'.

To celebrate, we ran a contest asking you to show us your oldest Gusher Pumps still in operation. The submissions did not disappoint. Our winning pump has been running for 57 years, just edging out the runner-up which has 55 years of reliable operation!

Our winners are:

  • Austin Miller of distributor Great Lakes Pump and Supply won our grand prize Yeti Haul Cooler with a Ruthman Series Vertical Flanged pump (5K-2 model) manufactured in 1967.
  • Gregg Gordon of distributor Anderson Process took a close second $100 Amazon gift card with a Ruthman Vertical Immersed pump (9040-S model) manufactured in 1967.
  • Lloyd Pratt of Mazda Toyota Manufacturing also won an Amazon gift card with a unique application submission of a horizontal ANSI style pump (model PCL6x8-11) installed on an ECOAT pre-wash line.

While these are the oldest of the contest submissions, they're not the longest running Gusher Pumps we've seen. In 2000, a Ruthman Series UL model pump was sent in for basic maintenance. Based on the serial number, we verified it was manufactured in 1942 for American Tool Works. Rather than service and return a piece of Gusher history, we sent them a brand new pump, keeping the original for display in our offices. Had the pump been returned to service, it certainly would have surpassed 58 years of operation, easily topping these submissions.

Stay tuned in the new year for the photos and full application details from our winners!

Engineering Story: New Vertical Turbines for Aging Fountain

Dodge fountain in Detroits Hart Plaza

With an assist from Great Lakes Pumps, PSI comes in clutch for NFL Draft

This spring, the 2024 NFL Draft Experience brought the eyes of the sporting world to Detroit's Hart Plaza. The event also marked the re-commissioning of the plaza’s centerpiece, the iconic Horace E. Dodge and Son Memorial Fountain. Two Ruthman Companies’ divisions, Great Lakes Pumps and Process Systems Inc, collaborated to deliver the vertical turbine pumps powering the fountain’s majestic display.

In less than three months, PSI refurbished the fountain's four original vertical turbines with all new Process Systems components below the head. The existing head and seal boxes were overhauled and equipped with new seals.

Retirements

Tim Bowen-Gusher Pumps

We were incredibly remiss in last year's newsletter, failing to recognize the 2023 retirement of long-time Gusher Production Manager Tim Bowen.

Tim had an amazing 44-year run at Gusher, starting on night shift as a young man of 18 back in 1979. Not only did he find his career at Gusher, it's where he met his wife of 34 years, Becky.

Read on for all the highlights of Tim's career, as well as pictures from his retirement celebration with his Gusher family.

Marv Filas-Great Lakes Pump and Supply

This year, Sales Engineer Marv Filas also retired from a long stint in the pump industry. He spent the last decade of his 40 year career at GLP, where his winning personality made him a favorite of customers and coworkers alike.

Known affectionately as Mr. Sparkles, Marv's coworkers paid tribute to his pump knowledge and character.

Read their tributes.

New in 2025!

ANSI Program Restructure

Gusher will roll out a significant restructure program of the ANSI Series in January. ANSI pump pricing will be reduced approximately 21% and our finished ANSI component inventory will be greatly increased to facilitate faster lead times.

The program goal is to ship bare pumps in 1 week and complete pumps with motor, baseplate, coupling, and guard in 4 weeks-without compromising the quality Gusher is known for.

A special pump kit offering will be made to select distributors and OEM customers. Please contact your Regional Sales Manager if you would like to be considered for this opportunity.

Line Expansion

RAE is adding 6 models of horizontal and vertical pumps to its in-stock, quick-ship pump offerings.

Many RAE pumps are suitable for replacement of popular brand-name pumps. The new CF Series pumps are dimensionally similar to Wilo/Scot classic horizontal pumps. Check out the latest RAE Equivalent Chart for crossover information.

All CF Series models are available in cast iron with stainless steel impeller and all stainless construction. CF pumps will be available in Q1 2025. For up-to-date stock information on RAE's entire pump line, visit raepumps.com/in-stock-pumps/

Engineering Story: Gusher Pumps

Cheers to Gusher and Anderson Process collaboration on Dancing Goat Distillery's cooling tower

Three generations of the Maas family turned their passion for spirits into a unique Wisconsin distillery. Opened in 2017, the Dancing Goat Distillery has steadily grown, expanding its production from the original line of whiskeys to include brandy, gin, rye and liqueurs. That expansion brought the need for a new cooling tower, completed in 2023.

Distributor Anderson Process collaborated with Dancing Goat, its mechanical contractors and engineers, and the cooling tower supplier to incorporate two Gusher 7550 Series vertical pumps and an 8000 Series self-priming pump into the system design.

Gusher Website Upgrades

PumpIQ Pump Selection Software, Expanded Product Pages, Lead Times

During 2024 several updates were made to Gusher.com to make selecting and ordering pumps easier for our users.

A completely new selection software, PumpIQ was introduced. This powerful tool searches the entire Gusher Pumps catalog based on desired system design points and other key parameters.

To learn more about the pumps suggested by PumpIQ, the product pages are being revamped to include model-specific interactive 3D CAD models, drawings, curves and literature. The new format will be applied series by series across the Gusher line.

Finally, the new Current Lead Time page provides up-to-date manufacturing times for many of its popular standard pumps.
