“Current Events Discussion Group”

Tuesday, July 28th @9am @ Richard Walker’s Schaumburg, IL - In-Person

If you are in the Northwest Burbs of Chicago ….. Join a long-running Schaumburg discussion group for breakfast, current events, and respectful conversation across viewpoints. A growing core of liberals and progressives has helped bring more balance to the discussion in recent years.

Location -> Richard Walker’s Pancake House, 1300 N. Roselle Road, Schaumburg, IL. The restaurant is located just north of Golf Road in a shopping center on the west side of the street.

Breakfast begins at 9:00 AM, and discussion starts at 10:00 AM and continues until 12:00 PM. You can arrive at any time, and if you plan to order food, please do so shortly after you arrive but must be before 9:40. This is a free gathering, open to all, with no registration required. You do pay for your b’fst..

This discussion group has been meeting for 12–15 years, on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. Since the pandemic, the group had leaned heavily Republican, but a consistent core of liberals and progressives has started attending and are helping bring more balance, perspective, and energy to the conversation.

This week’s topic is Artificial Intelligence, including AI and the rapid growth of data centers. Bring any research, questions, or concerns you have. This is a great space for progressives and liberals who want to engage thoughtfully, share ideas, and help shape a more balanced and informed community conversation.

Looking ahead, the next meeting will be Tuesday, August 11, 2026, and Democratic State Representative Michelle Mussman is expected to join the discussion. Start thinking now about the questions you want to ask.

‘# 🌎Join “Climate & Environmental’s” screening & discussion of “Kiss the Ground documentary” Tues, 7/28@7 CDT

_This month’s Climate and Environmental Issues Zoom will feature a screening and discussion of Kiss the Ground, a documentary narrated by Woody Harrelson that presents a hopeful, science-based response to the climate crisis. The film highlights how healthy soil can draw carbon from the atmosphere, restore ecosystems, and support farmers and communities._

Through stories from farmers, scientists, and activists, the film introduces regenerative agriculture—practices that rebuild soil, increase biodiversity, and improve water retention while reducing erosion and pollution. It makes the case that changing how food is grown can be one of the most practical climate solutions available today.

After the screening, moderators Mark Lundholm and Marilyn S. will lead a discussion about what these ideas mean for the Northwest Suburbs of Chicago and beyond. The conversation will connect the film’s message to local organizing, policy advocacy, and everyday action around soil, water, and climate protection.

Join us on July 28 at 7 PM CDT for an evening of learning, reflection, and action hosted by NWSOFA-Indivisible’s Climate and Environmental Issues team. Come ready to explore how regenerative agriculture can strengthen communities and help build a healthier future.

“Storing Firearms Safely & Securely”

Thursday, JULY 30 @7 Central / 8pm eastern l ZOOM

_We’re excited to invite you to our Gun Violence Prevention Zoom meeting on July 30 at 7 pm, featuring a returning speaker who made a strong impact earlier this year._

Steve McHugh, who many of you may remember from his well-received presentation in January, will be joining us again with new and expanded insights. His previous session sparked thoughtful discussion, and we’re looking forward to continuing that conversation.

Since then, Steve has been deepening his research on the most effective ways to encourage gun owners to store their firearms safely and securely. His work focuses on practical, evidence-based strategies that can help reduce risk and save lives.

He has also begun expanding his research beyond Illinois, bringing a broader national perspective to this issue. This is a great opportunity to learn from evolving research and consider how these approaches can strengthen local and national efforts.

Join NWSOFA–Indivisible for our 13th Annual Picnic

August 22, from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM In-Person

#### Location: 4152 N. Terramere Ave, Arlington Heights, IL. On the north shores of LAKE TERRAMERE_

_This is a full day of community, conversation, and grassroots energy in a fun and welcoming outdoor setting. Lunch will be served from 2:00–3:00 PM, followed by an open mic session featuring candidates and elected officials. _

Throughout the day, people can gather by the lake, in the gazebo, on the lawn, and on the upper and lower decks for conversation, organizing, and connecting with fellow activists.

About 1-200 people attend over the course of the day, although smaller groups naturally gather in different spaces at different times.

Candidates often stop by between canvassing shifts to speak briefly and connect with attendees before heading back out.

Co-sponsoring groups already include local Democratic township organizations and Indivisible groups, with additional partners expected to join.

This is always a really fun and energizing day, rain or shine. Some people stop in for a short visit, while others stay into the evening for extended conversations, side meetings, and social time. Save the date and plan to be part of this annual summer tradition.
