Rx for Resilence: Inukshuk

An Inuksuk (plural: Inuksuit) is a traditional stone landmark built by Inuit, Inupiat, Kalaallit, and other Indigenous peoples of the Arctic regions of North America. Meaning "to act in the capacity of a human," the inuksuk has been used for thousands of years as a guidepost, marker, or symbol of safety and direction in the harsh northern landscape.

Purpose and Meaning

  • Navigation and Landmarks: Inuksuit were historically constructed to mark travel routes, hunting grounds, or sacred spaces.

  • Community and Connection: They represent cooperation and survival, reminding us of the importance of working together in challenging environments.

  • Cultural Symbolism: Beyond their practical use, inuksuit carry spiritual and cultural significance, symbolizing hope, friendship, and human presence.

Today, the Inuksuk has become a broader symbol of community, resilience, and unity. It was notably featured on the flag of Nunavut and served as the emblem of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, connecting the world to Indigenous traditions.
