Praful, you are a successful First Gen role model. What is your personal story and how did you get to where you are today?
I grew up in a small town in India without electricity and running water. The town had a one-room library with newspapers, which was my window to the world. Although my parents had little formal education, they were committed to their children’s education. I was fortunate to have dedicated teachers that inspired me to succeed especially in science and mathematics. We had to study four languages as part of high school graduation requirements. It was easy for me to decide to major in chemistry when I came to New York City for college. It was a dream come true to get a ‘technician’ position in the prestigious medicinal chemistry department of Pfizer Central Research. The company had a free education program where I obtained a MBA degree by attending night school, mainly to quench my thirst to learn. Thanks to the encouragement from my friends and my desire to set an example for next generation, I went back to school and obtained a PhD degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of Kansas. I was fortunate to be hired by Marion Laboratories (now part of Sanofi-Aventis) and worked there in formulation and regulatory departments for several years. To challenge myself, I moved to work for start-up biotech companies. I retired when the company I was working for was acquired by a large pharmaceutical company. Since then I have been helping out impact oriented start-up companies as an angel investor.

You have a degree in chemistry, an MBA, and a PhD in Pharmaceutics. What drew you to the field of Pharmaceutical Products and led you to work at Marion Labs?
Having lost my parents at a young age, and having an interest in science, I was keen on working in the healthcare field. I enjoyed working in the exploratory research program where we focused on discovery of new drug molecules. It takes over fifteen years for the drug to be on the market after discovery because of toxicological studies, product development, clinical trials and regulatory approval. I went to graduate school to study all aspects of pharmaceutical product development at University of Kansas. Fortunately, Marion Laboratories (founded by Ewing Marion Kauffman) was hiring and the company was close to the graduate school and family. Marion Laboratories was one of the best companies to work for in those days because of very caring founder who started the Kauffman foundation.

You are devoted to mentorship and assisting startups, and part of GlobalMindED’s leadership. Where did your strong sense of service and leadership come from?
The sense of service and obligation to help others was instilled in me as a kid with simple acts such as making sure that there is some food to feed beggars and stray animals at every meal; I never cleaned my dinner plate completely! This good karma worked as I have been surrounded by helpful friends, family, teachers and mentors. Empathy and humility was taught early. Over the decades hundreds of people, most of them quietly, have contributed to my success. I had amazing teachers and professors who shaped my career. I am fortunate to have worked for wonderful bosses at several companies who set examples as great leaders.

How did you first connect with GlobalMindED?
GlobalMindED conference has great speakers from all over the country, and one of them was Jessica Matthews in 2016. I am one of the early investor in her company Uncharted Power which converts wasted kinetic energy into useful electricity. I went to see the conference specifically to see Jessica and of course, ran into Carol Carter who convinced me that I should be a part of GlobalMindED.

What would you most like to say to our First Gen college students?
Luck seems to follow me when I work harder and smarter! Life is especially difficult for First Gen college students as they may not have many role models and mentors for help. On other hand you have lived through tough times and that grit, determination and burning desire to succeed is a recipe for success, so you can do it. Find smart, successful people for advice. Listen and learn. Remain curious. Improve communication skills. When you are successful, be a role model, be the example and help others.

GlobalMindED DAF and the SDG Impact Fund are a powerful combined force for good as the 2019 year comes to a close and we reflect on the gratitude and the commitments we make to the causes we care most about. The DAF offers immense power and flexibility for giving prior to the year's end as you plant seeds of generous intention for 2020 and the decade ahead.
When you contribute to GlobalMindED, you support First Gen students. We have served more than 400 students by connecting them to role models, mentors, internships and jobs. Your generous support will allow us to take our work 10x and reach these talented students at scale who lack the resources and support we provide. Your support also helps teachers who can't afford the conference fees, faculty at colleges which are under resourced and students who persist at those universities despite food insecurity and/or housing insecurity.

THE FLYOVER NATION
Energy's Role in a Troubled Heartland
By J.C. Whorton
A unique and timely discussion of the challenging issues facing the country’s troubled Heartland.
Since the beginning of westward expansion into the Heartland’s vast regions, natural resource development has played a historic role in shaping its communities. Today, domestic oil and gas development offers one of the strongest prospects for the Heartland’s present and future prosperity as well as the nation’s re-emergence as a dominant player in the global energy economy.
The U.S. is now the world’s largest producer of crude oil and natural gas, two circumstances that are universally disrupting international geopolitical order. The earth has a finite supply of natural resources and a rapidly growing and over consuming population.
As America positions itself for a very uncertain and constantly evolving global marketplace, will the Heartland become America’s “great connector” or “great divide”?
