Rx for Resilience: Accountability

Accountability impacts how we lead, how we work with others, and how we take responsibility for our choices. At its core, accountability is about showing up, being honest about outcomes, and making things right when they go wrong.

In any organization or community, accountability builds trust. It allows people to rely on one another, strengthens teamwork, and encourage open communication. When people are clear about their responsibilities and follow through on them, everyone benefits. Projects move forward, problems get solved, and progress becomes possible.

This same principle applies on a larger scale. In a democracy, accountability maintains public trust in institutions. It ensures that power is not used without oversight, and that mistakes or abuses are met with transparency and consequences. When accountability is ignored, the damage can be deep—but when it is upheld, resilience follows.

Major events like the Civil Rights Movement, the Watergate investigation, and more recently, the peaceful reconvening of Congress after January 6th remind us that accountability is not just a personal virtue—it is a public necessity. It allows individuals and systems to course-correct and reinforces a shared commitment to fairness and truth.
