Rx for Resilience: Animals
The Feast of St. Francis of Assisi invites reflection on the deep bond between humans and animals. St. Francis, the patron saint of animals and ecology, saw all living beings as sacred — brothers and sisters sharing one earth. His life was a call to live with compassion, simplicity, and reverence for the natural world.
This spirit of kinship also defined the work of Dr. Jane Goodall, whose ground breaking research and lifelong advocacy reshaped how the world understands animals — especially our primate relatives. Jane was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, recognized for her outstanding contributions to her field. Her legacy is one of listening, learning, and speaking up for those who cannot speak for themselves.
Though they lived centuries apart, St. Francis and Dr. Goodall shared empathy and a profound respect for the interconnectedness of life. Their lives call us to look more closely, act more gently, and protect more fiercely.
May their example remind us that:
- Every creature has value
- Science and spirituality can meet in reverence
- Hope is fostered by love and care
Whether by offering kindness to an animal, supportinga conservation, feeding the birds, visiting a zoo or wildlife sanctuary, or simply being present in nature — we honor all heartbeats and the many ways they enrich our lives.
