Rx for Resilience: Bloom
An age old adage from Saint Francis de Sales, a Bishop in Geneva who lived from 1567-1622 reads, “Bloom where you are planted.”
Sometimes, life places us in unexpected spaces — new cities, unfamiliar roles, or seasons of uncertainty. But in the toughest challenge, you can grow the most. Blooming isn’t about having the perfect conditions; it’s about making the most of where you are, with what you have.
It’s in the quiet moments, it’s the small wins and the enduring belief in yourself that your roots will provide your strength. It’s in choosing to show up, to try again, to stay kind — when no one is watching.
You are capable of more than survival. Like the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas said in one of his most famous works, “the force that through the green fuse drives the flower drives my green age." Whether your bloom emerges this spring through fertile ground or through a crack in a concrete slab, you are made to bloom.
If this resonates, you may want to read David Brooks’ article: “A Surprising Route to the Best Life Possible.” It’s It’s a reminder that even the most unconventional paths can lead to something beautiful — sometimes better than what we originally imagined possible. And, the challenges that we create for ourselves are often the things that make us bloom, never forgetting that we can always re-pot or re-plant ourselves into more expansive and nurturing terrain.
