Rx for Resilience: Independence

Every Fourth of July, we in the United States light fireworks and raise flags—but too often we forget the sheer audacity of what we're commemorating. Independence Day isn't just a birthday for a nation; it's the anniversary of an earthshaking idea: that people have the right to govern themselves.

In the late 1700s, thirteen colonies stood under the shadow of the world’s most powerful monarchy. British rule was marked not only by taxes levied without representation, but by a broader denial of the colonists’ rights as English subjects. The Stamp Act, the Townshend Acts, the Tea Act—each sparked protest. But it was the bloodshed at Lexington and Concord in 1775 that made revolution inevitable.

The Declaration of Independence, adopted on July 4, 1776, was the lightning bolt. Crafted by Thomas Jefferson and ratified by the Second Continental Congress, it was more than a list of grievances against King George III. It was a philosophical leap, asserting "that all men are created equal," and that the legitimacy of governments derives from the consent of the governed. No king, no matter how divine his right was claimed to be, stood above the people.

What followed was nothing short of miraculous. A ragtag army of farmers, merchants, and tradespeople—with help from France—defeated the mightiest military on Earth. From that crucible emerged not just a new nation, but a new model of governance: one where power flows from citizens upward, not from rulers down.

Independence means having the freedom to speak, to choose, to challenge, and to change the systems that shape our lives. It is the right to participate, to question authority, and to build a future that reflects the voices and values of the people. It is also the space to dream, to grow, and to act without fear — knowing that your rights are protected and your contributions matter.

At its core, independence is about possibility. It is the foundation that allows innovation to thrive, communities to flourish, and people from every walk of life to shape the world around them. It’s what fuels hope in hard times and courage in moments of uncertainty.

So this Independence Day, celebrate not just the fireworks, but the fire within. Remember the radical bravery it took to cast off empire. Reflect on the founding promise: that liberty is not given—it is taken, declared, and defended, generation after generation.

Because July 4 isn’t just about what happened. It’s about what’s still possible.
