Rx for Resilience: Juneteenth

Juneteenth began in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Texas were told they were free on June 19th. It was just last year that President Biden declared Juneteenth a federal holiday. You may also here this day referred to as “Juneteenth Independence Day,” “Freedom Day” or “Emancipation Day.” Today, the celebration of Juneteenth can be seen across the United States. Parades, barbecues, fellowship, gatherings and celebratory events create spaces to reflect and enjoy the meaning behind the holiday.

As we reflect on the years passed since June 19th, 1865, there has been much joy, but also much pain. The treatment and views towards African Americans in the United States at times has progressed immensely, while then also regressing back into racist, violent behaviors. In recent years, we have seen treatment of Black people parallel closely with that of the '90s and '60s. Violence and devaluation of our Black community has increased, making some reflect on the true meaning and sentiments of this holiday.

Today, we encourage you all to celebrate the gains we have made as a society. Also, take time to reflect on some of the losses and the growth we must continue to strive towards. To allies who are reading, celebrate Juneteenth by supporting a local organization, attending an event, writing to a Senator or Representative or use your role in your community to advocate for changes. What freedoms do we still need to fight to protect? How can we continue to increase and improve inclusion of our Black communities? There is much more space for growth and change.

How can you take a step towards creating change today?

From all of us at GlobalMindED, Happy Juneteenth! May we celebrate Black joy today and keep our gaze fixed on the change we will continue fighting for.
