Rx for Resilience: Purplish
Despite the majority of right and left wing news reports, there are many people who are reasonable Republicans, decent Democrats and impressive Independents. The leadership of these majorities is often overshadowed, but it is strong in our country as people strive to live their lives productively, to work, to serve and to enrich their communities beyond the lines of their own families. Many see their views as “purplish,” not politically red or blue, per se, but representing the majority of people who can truly work across the metaphorical aisle and accomplish the hard work that is before us.
Last week, there was a strong nonpartisan effort from Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Senator Chuck Schumer of New York to address climate, technology superiority and other issues. We hope that there are more nonpartisan collaborations where our elected officials can get to win-win. We welcome more audiences for citizens at all levels to voice their opinions, know that their life and their vote matters, debate respectfully, understand each other more broadly, and reach common ground.
Two organizations focus on these nonpartisan initiatives; More in Common and the Millennial Action Project. Layla Zaidane, who runs the Millennial Action project was at GlobalMindED 2022 June conference and led a panel with Janet Tran from the Ronald Reagan Institute and several students. All participants, as first gen immigrants, addressed the broader trends of building strong civic engagement as well as their own personal leadership in the United States through the lens of their country of origin.
Dan Vallone, who runs the U.S. office of More in Common, was interviewed this week about the “exhausted majority” of those made tired by our polarizing trends, opting out of voting and participating in our political process. Author of Healing a Divided Country, Vallone shares a new study of societal polarization with ways to reach and unify the “hidden tribes” who are otherwise not ready to engage.
To be resilient, we have to be more “purplish” no matter how we vote or what we think. This color is a symbol of unity, strength, dignity, accomplishment, sacrifice and success. George Washington chose this color when he awarded the first Purple Heart, one of the greatest honors a service member can receive. No matter who we are, let’s live up to the power and the potential of that color in our thoughts, words and deeds.
