Rx for Resilience: Recovery

The holidays can be a challenging time, especially for those battling addictions. Betty Ford made history when she shared her authentic struggle with alcohol and brought that struggle out of the shadows so that this addiction could be understood and treated. Today, we want to invite you all to find ways to support those facing hardship and challenges at this time, including hardships that you yourself may be facing. Specifically, we address the Recovery needed for those who face addictions of any kind, realizing that the holidays can be an especially challenging time. We hold you and your loved ones in our hearts as you hold compassion for yourself and those you love surmounting any manner of personal challenge.

Since COVID, the losses related to drug overdoses and/or suicide have risen. According to the AMA, drug related overdoses and death is an epidemic in the United States that continues to grow. More than 107,000 deaths were reported in the United States between December 2020 to December 2021.

Drug misuse and overdose affects us all, and the key to rising out of this epidemic is through collective recovery. Addressing this crisis should be prioritized for the U.S. and also by you. There are various steps you can take to help those who are recovering, help those who have lost someone due to an overdose, or to recover yourself.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) offers these services to help with drug and alcohol abuse:

  • Call SAMHSA's national helpline at 1-800-662-HELP (1-800-662-4357). This treatment referral and information service is confidential, free, and available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year in English and Spanish. It’s for individuals and family members facing mental and/or substance use disorders.
  • Search for a treatment facility near you. Get help with problems related to substance abuse, addiction, or mental health issues.
  • The Alcohol Treatment Navigator explains how different treatment options work, how to choose a quality program, and how to get support for yourself or for a loved one through the recovery process.
  • Get medication-assisted treatment (MAT). This involves using medications with counseling and behavioral therapies to treat substance use disorders. It can be used for opioid addictions, such as heroin and prescription pain relievers that contain opiates, and to help prevent an opioid overdose.   

What can you do to help support those recovering from addiction and hardships?

Join the Brazelton Touchpoints Center (BTC) for its second annual National Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Summit, Families in Recovery: The First 1,000 Days – Pregnancy, Newborns, and the First Years, on Wednesday, February 1, 2023, from 11 AM – 5:30 PM ET / 8 AM – 2:30 PM PT.

Families in recovery are the experts on their families and their children — and on the unique challenges and opportunities of their first 1,000 days. This year, BTC is inviting family members with lived experience with SUD, including those who now devote their lives to supporting other families in recovery, to share with us their expertise.

This all-day virtual summit will feature three nationwide conversations on peer-recovery approaches to centering family voice; building on families’ strengths, resources, and wisdom; and shifting power to overcome racial and economic inequities in access to treatment and other resources.

Making Impact: Leveraging Collaborations and Partnerships to Advance STEM Equity

Moderated by Dr. Susan Swayze, Founder & CEO Diversity Think Tank. Dr. Swayze is a DEI strategist and expert researcher who created Diversity Think Tank to help organizations identify transformative solutions and accomplish audacious goals. Susan is a highly sought-after speaker on topics related to diversity, equity, and inclusion with special emphasis on holding conversations about bias, race, and gender pay equity. She has inspired audiences in Africa, Brazil, Canada, and across the U.S. An accomplished scholar, Dr. Swayze has authored three books and more than 50 scholarly works. Speakers include:

Melvin Stallings, President, Cyber Green Group
CGG is a workforce training non-profit for teachers and students in STEAM (Science, Tech, Engineering, Arts, and Math) that trains, educates, and creates innovators of the future. Mr. Stallings is also a Curriculum Development Specialist and has written many math and science curriculums for high schools throughout the US. He has presented professional development workshops at local and national conferences and managed various STEAM initiatives for over 1,500 students in subject areas like Cyber Forensic, Biomedical Engineering, Coding, and the Art of Green Science across the US.

Dr. Janelle M. Johnson, Associate Professor of STEM Education, Metropolitan State University
Dr. Johnson is co-editor of “STEM21: Equity in Teaching and Learning to Meet Global Challenges of Standards, Engagement, and Transformation” (2018). Her research focuses on interdisciplinary STEM equity and inclusive approaches to teaching and learning. Janelle taught K-12 math and science with English Learners primarily in Guatemala, and now teaches multicultural education and science methods at the university. Dr. Johnson is on the board of the Colorado Assoc. of Science Teachers, the Director of the Colorado STEM Ecosystem 2.0, and she served on the Council of State Science Supervisors ACESSE Network in the disrupting ableism affinity group.

Lisette Torres-Gerald, Senior Research Associate and Program Coordinator, TERC
Dr. Torres-Gerald is a scientist and disabled scholar-activist at TERC, a non-profit made up of teams of math and science education and research experts. Her academic research focuses on addressing racial and gender inequity in science and higher education. Lisette is an active member of Science
for the People and a co-founder and executive board member of the National Coalition for Latinxs with Disabilities. Dr. Torres-Gerald is also an advisory board member of Science Friday’s Breakthrough Dialogues Program and the Invisible Disability Project (IDP)
