What a wild and unexpected first week of 2021. While we saw many things unravel in the U.S. from our democracy to basic tenets of human respect to a US total of 4,000 COVID deaths in a single day, we can rely on ourselves to transcend the chaos and lawlessness that characterized last week and much of last year. A perplexed world watched us. We all have setbacks and limitations as human beings, but collectively, we have large stumbling blocks to our democracy, to equity for all people, to mental health challenges to the array of COVID-caused issues and to housing, transportation and jobs for so many who struggle as we start this year. On a personal level, we need to transcend our own weaknesses so that we can be the best people possible. As a collective, we need to bring out the best in others which involves inclusive leadership:
· Listening to others whose views are not yours
· Holding others to the highest standards of respect and decency
· Limiting time with those who bring you down or disparage others
· Looking for common ground instead of staying polarized
· Realizing that it is often grey, instead of just black or white
· Choosing love over fear
· Choosing to forgive as opposed to holding a grudge
· Courageously standing up for others who can benefit from your help
· Choosing to be inclusive instead of exclusive
· Seeking to respect and understand those who are different than you
