Principal's Post
Dear Ryland Families,
I
n May, our third, fourth and fifth grade students participated in the KPREP state assessment. The 3rd
graders were tested in math, and reading. The 4
th
graders were tested in math, reading, language mechanics and science. The 5
th
graders were tested in on-demand writing, math, reading, and social studies. The total score is calculated by the grade level tests along with Student Growth, Gap goals and Program Review.
For the 2015 - 2016 school year our overall KPREP score was a 73.7. This classifies Ryland Heights Elementary as a high performing school. In addition to being DISTINGUISHED we are also considered Progressing.
We are proud of the hard work our students and staff do every day. While we are excited about these test scores, we will continue to strive to meet the needs of all of our students and provide a safe and caring educational environment. We appreciate the work you do at home with your child and we know it takes a team effort to continue to see improvement in our students. Our cheer we share with students is: "Proficient or Distinguished is our Ryland goal this year! We know that we can do it, because Tigers have no fear!"
Clubs
:
Students in grades 1st - 5th will be participating in a monthly club starting this Wednesday. Our staff members are leading these clubs where students will attend for about an hour once a month. Students were given an opportunity to choose the top three clubs in which they'd like to participate. A few examples of clubs are: Lego, scrapbooking, Science, jewelry making and cooking around the world.
In addition, each month we will be recognizing students who are exhibiting positive character traits along with the 7 Habits of Highly Effective students. This month, students are recognized for Habit #1 - Being Proactive. We will also be recognizing classrooms for classroom compliments and attendance!

Kentucky's New Definition of Bullying...
KRS Definition of Bullying: Amend KRS 158.148 to define "bullying"; require a school board's code of acceptable behavior to prohibit bullying; require the code to include procedures for investigating and responding to reports of bullying and a method to protect a person reporting a bullying incident. (1) (a) As used in this section, "bullying" means any unwanted verbal, physical, or social behavior among students that involves a real or perceived power imbalance and is repeated or has the potential to be repeated: 1. That occurs on school premises, on school-sponsored transportation, or at a school-sponsored event; or 2. That disrupts the education process. (b) This definition shall not be interpreted to prohibit civil exchange of opinions or debate or cultural practices protected under the state or federal Constitution where the opinion expressed does not otherwise materially or substantially disrupt the education process.
What is the difference between Conflict and Bullying or Telling and Tattling? Click on the information sheets below to find out?
Types of Bullying:
- Verbal bullying is saying or writing mean things. Verbal bullying includes things like teasing, name-calling, Inappropriate sexual comments or threatening
- Social bullying refers to as relational bullying which involves hurting someone's reputation or relationships. Social bullying might be for example; leaving someone out of a group on purpose, spreading rumors about someone or embarrassing someone in public
- Physical bullying involves hurting a person's body or their possessions. Physical bullying includes such acts as; hitting, kicking, pinching, spitting, tripping, pushing, taking or breaking someone's possessions.

Safety Tipline, Online Prevention
- (KCSS) S.T.O.P.! Tipline is an "online" reporting/prevention tool. If students, parents or community members know of an unsafe situation in school (bullying, weapons, drugs or alcohol, etc.), they can anonymously pass on that information to school personnel by using this basic email format. Approximately 60 school districts have partnered with KCSS and are providing this prevention tool to their school community. It is free of charge to schools in Kentucky.
FREE Hotline: What You Can Do to Help End Bullying - (National Suicide Prevention Lifeline) While bullying doesn't cause suicide, a stressful environment and persistent, emotional victimization can increase a person's risk of suicide. Together, we can create awareness about the dangers of bullying and give emotional support to those who may be contemplating suicide. If you or someone you know is in an emotional distress or suicidal crisis, please call the Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).
From SAMHSA - Get Know Bullying, the free app from SAMHSA that can prevent bullying. Research shows that parents and caregivers who spend at least 15 minutes a day talking with their child can build the foundation for a strong relationship and help prevent bullying.

Attendance
Don't be late for an important date!
Just a reminder...tardies or leaving early count against perfect attendance.
Educational Enhancement Requests (EHO)
If you request an EHO (Educational Enhancement Opportunity) This needs to be requested at least a week before absence. If your child is absent and receives an EHO, the student needs to present to the class what was learned by the experience. A written report also needs to be submitted to the principal before it is excused.
