PalmettoPride Litter Trashes Everyone Art Contest

PalmettoPride knows that South Carolina students are creative and care about the environment. Its annual art contest is available to any South Carolina teachers or educational groups with students in grades K-5 to participate in this fun and educational competition. Elementary school students will need to create artwork themed around “Litter Trashes Everyone,” on the paper provided by PalmettoPride. S.C. Sea Grant Consortium Hiring Coastal Outreach Intern
Applications open until position filled
The S.C. Sea Grant Consortium seeks an undergraduate or graduate student for the position of Coastal Outreach Intern to assist with a three-year, community-based, salt marsh restoration project funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The successful student will work under the direction of the Consortium’s Marine Education Specialist and will collaborate with the project partners: the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, Clemson University, and the South Carolina Aquarium. Join the S.C. Sea Grant Consortium and Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum for the last event in the 2020 Educator Science Café Series! For just $10, enjoy conversations with local scientists and experts, heavy appetizers, and be eligible for prizes and giveaways. In the final café of this series, S.C. Sea Grant Consortium and Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum will be bringing several microplastics activities to incorporate into your classroom, but we also want to hear from you! You all do such amazing things in and out of the classroom, and we'd love to give you a forum to share your creativity and accomplishments. In addition to peer feedback, we will have local microplastics researchers Dr. John Weinstein (The Citadel) and Dr. Barbara Beckingham (College of Charleston) in attendance to provide an expert point of view. If you are planning to bring a microplastics activity, you will also receive a $5 discount on your ticket price.

Holland Lifelong Learning Series - "Sex, Drugs, and Seaslime": An Evening with Author, Dr. Ellen Prager

"Signals From Songbirds" with Dr. Melissa Hughes, Professor of Ornithology at the College of Charleston AND "Abstract Soundscapes" with local artist Marielena Martinez.

Rise early and you are rewarded with the melodies of songbirds. But why do they sing? Animal behaviorist and evolutionary biologist Dr. Melissa Hughes will share highlights from her research into the sounds of songbirds. What do these signals mean? How are they used? How do they vary? Cultivate SciArt will explore the diversity of bird songs to bring a new appreciation to our Carolina morning soundscapes. Marielena Martinez will then show us how to turn these soundscapes into abstract art, inspired by some of the work of Paul Klee. Through pen andink we will turn sounds into patterns, and then add emotion and imagery with watercolors -- all while being inspired by early morning bird songs. Audubon South Carolina will also be on hand to advise participants on native plantings and habitat to appreciate more birds in their own backyards, with native perennial seeds to take home. They will discuss their policy initiatives for the coming year and how participants can help advocate for birds. We hope you will join us for this exciting collaboration of science, art, and community in action.

S.C. Sea Grant Now Offering Classroom Programs!
S.C. Sea Grant Consortium is excited to offer a limited number of educator-facilitated classroom programs in Spring 2020. These 45- or 90-minute programs will utilize the Wetlands Enviroscape© Model to demonstrate the flow of water through South Carolina watersheds and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Teachers can choose to tailor their program by focusing on human impacts on the watershed (development and land use, pollution, microplastics, etc.) or on watershed ecology (flora and fauna, biotic and abiotic factors, ecosystem services, etc.).
