Captain's Log -- February 2, 2023

Our partnership with the Pascagoula Recreation Department continues with the star of our Spring Young Mariner Classes!

Today's topic was Maritime Navigation! The kids used our new tablets, purchased with funds from the Pat Santucci grant, to find their position on the earth, and to discover what stars are in the night sky above them tonight! They finished the day by creating their own constellations. We look forward to seeing the kids on Thursday afternoons!

Our commitment to our community's GO BLUE maritime workforce continues!

We hosted NOAA's hiring event last Thursday in our conference room to huge success. We had double the foot traffic of the Gulfport event two days prior! Seven candidates were hired on the spot, with several more candidates beginning the process of being hired at the event.

Last week, the Jackson County Historical and Genealogical Society met here at the Maritime Center. Dan Lee gave a tutorial on using the Mississippi Department of Archives and History online database for research purposes. Using the database, you can access the digital archive of the MDAH for any topic of interest concerning Mississippi history. The collections are being continually digitized, so more will be added as research continues.

You can access the MDAH digital database here.

The Maritime Community Council is a group of community seafarers sharing experiences to ensure our Shipbuilding and Maritime Center is up to date on the latest maritime trends. Join us the 3rd Tuesday of every month at 4pm! Scallywags abound!
