For the last few years, Rob Koch from S&P Global has been a leader in the GlobalMindED Ability Status presentations and sessions at our live events prior to COVID. He is an inspiration and role model who exemplifies how to listen to others while making his own voice heard as a remarkable deaf leader. Rob is one of the many heroes we honor this month for National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

I strive to make myself heard regardless of whether I can hear or not. Even though I graduated with an economics degree, I fell into software development because I saw an issue with how we were processing retirement accounts at Prudential Insurance and wanted to fix it right then and there. I got support from my boss to build a prototype on the side and the pilot was so successful that they put it in place and I've been in software development ever since. Great timing too since my career started around when businesses were investing time and money moving from paper-driven workflows into electronic form. Demand for developers at that time was extremely high and I've leveraged that to success after success in my career. I've worked in all sorts of industries from government, non-profits, startups, educational, and corporations. While you can be a little cog in an organization, you can drive innovation and inclusivity by voicing your opinion in a tactful and positive manner. While many people have many different opinions at the workplace, it is a matter of getting to the right person at the right time. I tend to like to play on words, and at the same time I enjoy reversing negative clichés and switching them around making them attainable -- one example, "This is not the right time" or "There is no right time to...", well, my thought is to make things "right".
My career has led me into working extensively with various databases and ultimately into the cloud using Amazon Web Service's development and database platform. Over the years, I've blogged about my experiences, engaged with the developer community on social media, and did a few talks. Somehow AWS noticed the engagement and enthusiasm for their services, thus along with 4 others, we were recognized as one of the first AWS Data Heroes.
It always amazes me that we have such a huge diverse population on this planet and yet we are still learning something new from one another. As one of the leaders at S & P's Employee Resource Group, REACH (Recognizing Employees of All Abilities, Celebrate and Harness), we are finding ways to keep the conversation going even with a challenging work-from-home environment. For example, employees who are now caring for autistic children during lockdowns may not have all the time they need during the day to tend to work-related activities. Kids react at home differently than at school so that can be another challenge for employees. At the same time, employees gain mental benefits from socializing and learning from one another at the water cooler, whereas we are hindered somewhat by the pandemic. While we're all at home in spite of our juggling increasingly responsibilities -- REACH is still acting upon a few initiatives such as autism hiring, making our websites more accessible internally and externally, hosting internal talks, highlighting deaf & disabled employees in social media, building relationship with organizations that serves the deaf and disabled, and supporting community service.
Outside of work, I found a love for running less than 2 years ago. I started running one day with an ever-so-slow 2 miles; and now I run every chance I get. I've gotten up to 20 miles and still working my way higher! While running has health benefits, I also tie running in as a mental exercise just to say I can do it. The challenge with running is staying healthy enough to tack on ever more miles -- now I'm wondering if I'll ever reach 31 miles/50 kilometers.
GlobalMindED is a great organization to support since they go all out with putting people of talent together with mentors and providing support. I've already made a few connections in and outside of work to further my objectives at work and goals outside of life -- the annual conference is a great place to get started! For the young people, the key in opening paths in your career is the way you engage with your family, friends, co-workers, and the community-at-large.

Your copy should address 3 key questions: Who am I writing for? (Audience) Why should they care? (Benefit) What do I want them to do here? (Call-to-Action)
Create a great offer by adding words like "free" "personalized" "complimentary" or "customized." A sense of urgency often helps readers take an action, so think about inserting phrases like "for a limited time only" or "only 7 remaining!"
