SAAG is now in its 21st year of dreams, inspiration and artistry coming together.
A Message from Suzanne Villella, President
Autumn my favorite time of year. It's a fresh start. I welcome football games on our television. My nose is happily overwhelmed with the cinnamon scented pine cones that greet me at the entrance of the grocery store. My pumpkin spice candle scents my home. Blue jeans and boots are invited back to my wardrobe. The weather is absolutely perfect for morning coffee on the patio. My studio temperature is perfect for open door painting all day.

In between all of this autumn wonder, the Southern Arizona Arts Guild (SAAG) has
wonderful fall events planned. Our exhibition
continues at the Tucson International Airport. Our exhibition continues at the Overlook Restaurant. Our artists continue to grace the walls of Artful Adjustments. The SAAG Gallery is featuring and celebrating artists during First Thursday Art Walks. Our artists are engaging the public with the arts during the Third Saturday Community Art Fest at LaEncantada - a free and playful event that you should experience. We are hosting private groups at the gallery to continue connecting and educating the Tucson community and local artists. I hope you will join our talented artists for one or more of these exhibitions or events. You won't be disappointed. Please enjoy the newsletter which is full of great information.

It's a wonderful time of year and wonderful weather. Happy Autumn!
Suzanne Villella
President, Southern Arizona Arts Guild

Notes from Exhibitions
Our most recent installation at the Overlook Restaurant “Paper, Papel, Papier!” is a beautiful diverse exhibition of works made on or with paper. There are 21 artists participating and the exhibition includes 58 pieces of beautiful artwork. “Pocket Sketch” Kath Macaulay juried the exhibition and gave three awards of recognition (honorable mention) to Judith Wright, Glen Sears, Casonti McClure and Nancy Jacques. Awards of Merit that include cash went to Jennie Sweo, Maddie Wick and Erin Newman. Best of Show was awarded to Madeline Shea for her watercolor painting “The Politician”. The exhibition will be open through January 7 at the Overlook Restaurant in Oro Valley.

The next exhibition at the Overlook Restaurant will be themed “The Secret Garden”. The call for art will go live November 20th so get your creative juices going and give us a glimpse into what inspires you in flora and fauna, real or imagined!

In “Uncommon Knowledge” Roche Tissue Diagnostics and SAACA worked together to create a one-of-a-kind exhibition around disease screening and the value of regular testing. They used the stories of 21 Roche colleagues across the country that have experienced a disease diagnosis that has impacted their life. They selected 12 creatives to participate in this exhibition to collaborate with a colleague to create works of visual art, music, stories, and poetry. This collaborative event opened last Thursday with live performances of music and poetry.

The above image is by Bella Dolores. It is titled "F.E.A.R." Face Everything And Rise.
The Elaine Walsh sculpture above is titled
"Love Becomes Strength".
Beth Surdut created the silk scarf above. She is the only artist in the Ventana Gallery show that acted as both a writer and a visual artist. Click here to listen to The Mechanics of Listening.

The visual arts were hung in the Ventana Gallery and adjacent building. Hung next to the art were stories or poetry that was printed on large banners along with meaningful descriptions from artists and colleagues about their personal experience. All in all, it was and is a remarkable collaboration of artists and survivors coming together, sharing their gifts and experiences, with the hope of changing the way we take notice of and manage our health.
Roche Tissue Diagnostics and the Southern Arizona Arts and Cultural Alliance went above and beyond in their efforts and were rewarded with great success. Over 500 people joined us on opening night. I am honored to be a participant. The exhibition is open by appointment in the Roche Tissue Diagnostics Ventana Gallery until January 5th.

The role fashion plays in the art world will be at the heart of this event.

The Art & Fashion Fusion is designed to create relationships with other retailers at La Encantada, so we can cross market.

It is the hope that the partnerships formed for this event will turn into plans for a biannual event of this nature, bringing new potential art patrons into the gallery.

Watch for more opportunities to volunteer, or feature your work.

Any questions, contact SAAG Committee Chair Lawrence Peters.

ARTIST OPPORTUNITY
Special Event for SAAG in the Works for November 11
A SAAG Committeee is currently working on an event to take place in the gallery on November 11 from 4 pm to 6 pm. Titled
Art & Fashion Fusion, SAAG will partner with three of the retailers at La Encantada to present a fashion show at the gallery, where the fashion shown has been, in part, inspired by art at the SAAG Gallery.

There are three ways that SAAG members can participate.

  1. This event will include a silent auction component. The committee is looking for art donations for the auction. You do not need to be in the gallery to make a donation. If you have a relationship with a restaurant or arts organization, gift cards make great auction items as well. Remember a portion of the funding from the auction goes to support local arts and community outreach.
  2. Gallery artist, who make wearable products (including jewelry) will want to be part of the fashion show. An email will go out to you with more specifics on how you can participate at a later date.
  3. As with any event, the committee hopes all SAAG members will help get the word out about this first time event. A design for social media is in the works now and will be shared in October, so you can share it with your customers.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT
Theresa Poalucci
BY PAT SCOTT
Theresa Poalucci enjoys painting, clay sculpting, alcohol inks and multi media assemblies called Patio Jewels. She is also a dedicated volunteer for our SAAG organization.

How long have you been in Tucson?
I’ve had a house here for 20 years but I have only been here full time for 10 years. We lived in Seattle and it was so gray. We wanted to live somewhere where it was sunny after we retired. I was really surprised when we moved here that seeing the sunshine made me feel happier.

What is your education background? Did you study art?
I have a degree in psychology from the University of Washington. I was very interested in psychology and wanted to be a child psychologist but was sucked into the family business. I started working with my mother’s newspapers after I graduated and took the business over when she retired. I was a graphic artists, writer, editor and eventually publisher, in the newspaper business for over 40 years. Painting was just a side thing for me.

Tell us about your artistic journey.
My job was super stressful. I knew my mom liked to paint and it really calmed her nerves, so I thought I would give it a try. Painting was relaxing for me. After I retired I wanted to learn to sculpt, so I started taking classes with the Southern Arizona Clay Artists. I finally got to the point where I was sculpting faces and putting rays on them to make them sun faces. That was when I was first selling at the SAAG store in Casa Adobes. I was asked if I could make something under $100 for the gallery and I came up with a multi media hanging decoration I call Patio Jewels. I then discovered alcohol inks and I do a lot of that as well. Patio Jewels got me into the K Newby Gallery in Tubac. I also sell my work at Absolute Art Gallery and Gifts.

Do you have any goals with your work?
No. I did at one time. When I first started creating a lot of art, and I got into a gallery, I thought I am really going to make this into a business. But I found that I did not want to work that hard.

What is the biggest challenge in your work?
Finding the time to do it. I like the creative process. A lot of my art is a happy accident. I start a painting with something in mind and it turns into something else that surprises me.

Do you teach?
I love teaching art. My philosophy is that I want my students to just enjoy the process, putting the paint on the paper even if it doesn’t look like what they expect, they should just enjoy it. I tell them to let go, be childlike. They should be in class to have fun.

What is the greatest reward of doing your art?
The pleasure I get from making the art. It is not really the selling of the art, although I am glad if a piece I have done brings joy to someone else. It is nice but it is really the pleasure of creating something.

Who has influenced your work?
I am mostly influenced by what I see when I go to a museum or a gallery, all the variety. I visit galleries a lot. I am not set on one technique, I leave myself open. Sometimes I see someone is using a new technique and I have to run home and try it out, but in my own style.

Who is your favorite artist?
I really love Monet and I love Andrew Wyatt. I am just in awe of their work. I don’t have the patience or training to do what they do.

Tell us about your Membership in SAAG.
I’ve learned a lot from SAAG. Meeting other artists and getting little hints about things like how to do shows or where to get the best giclee printed, rather than figure it out on your own is a real plus. Also SAAG gave me the opportunity to be in a gallery and learn about what that is like. The other thing is it’s a belonging thing. You belong to a group and even though you don’t know everyone well, if you have an art issue you have someone to talk to about it. I volunteer to do the newsletter and I do all the advertising and PR. I want to help SAAG to succeed and I want our artists to succeed. We have so many talented artists at SAAG, it is an amazing organization.

Call to Artists
 At the Library

Pima County Public Library is excited to announce its 2023 Call to Artists. We are now accepting submissions to exhibit artwork at library branches.

Guidelines:
Artists of all ages who live or work in Pima County are eligible to apply. Our goals include creating exhibition opportunities for emerging artists from culturally diverse backgrounds and increasing public awareness of and interest in the visual arts.

Applicants will be asked to submit an artist statement and five images as examples of their work, though they are not required to showcase these specific pieces in exhibitions. Artists will be added to a roster for two years for gallery coordinators to contact to schedule exhibitions in public libraries.
HELP WANTED!
Can you volunteer?
As you all know, SAAG is a volunteer operation. Some jobs, like being a committee chair are ongoing. But many committees are looking for one-offs — a couple of hours of volunteer time for a special event. Here are some opportunities listed below.
A new SAAG Programs Coordinator is needed to bring educational and inspiring presentations to the SAAG General meetings once a month. Email Suzanne Villella if you are interested. Programs are already scheduled through February of next year, giving our new Programs Coordinator plenty of time to start planning.

Caryn Stedman, Ana Thompson and Celika Preciado have created a new Events Committee for SAAG. They are looking for volunteers and great ideas. Reach out to any of them and let them know you are interested! Just click on a name above to email.

This fall, the gallery is hosting several private events, where the organizations are asking to have some art demonstrations happening while they are there. If this is something you would like to do, email Suzanne Villella and let her know you would be available for this and she can let you know dates and times that are available. Just click on her name above to email.

On November 11, The Art & Fashion Fusion event is going to need a hosts of gallery volunteers in the late afternoon. Also the event is looking for items to be donated to auction off. If you are free that day and can volunteer, reach out to Lawrence Peters.

SAAG is looking for a committee chair to schedule all in-gallery demonstrations. For example the upcoming SAACA Fine Arts Festival at La Encantada takes place on November 4-5. This is a super busy weekend for the gallery and SAACA helps us promote the artists who do demos that weekend. If you are interested in taking on this job, please email Theresa Poalucci.

Every SAAG volunteer
is critical to making us the great organization that we are!
