The 6th Annual SABPA-UCSD Career Development Forum

Description: While many postdocs are interested in career opportunities in industry, it remains very challenging to navigate the application process and understand what it takes to obtain an industry position. In the 6th Annual Joint Career Development Forum, co-organized by SABPA and UCSD Postdoc Association, we have invited scientists and senior managers from a variety of local industries including life sciences, pharma, and consulting. The interactive panel will share with the audience their perspective of the industry hiring process and the qualifications, experience and many other attributes of successful candidates.

Lecture Title: "Enabling oncology drug approval by successful development of companion diagnostics"

Lecture Summary Hua and her team successfully contributed to six companion diagnostics and seven drug approvals in the past six and half year. She will share her experience in designing "fit-for-purpose" biomarker assays to enable drug development and FDA approval. Hua will also present the emerging technologies which may impact future biomarker research and clinical trials .
 
Speaker: Hua Gong
 
Hua Gong, M.D., Ph.D. serves as Sr. Director, Head of Genomics Biomarker Department at Navigate BioPharma, a Novartis subsidiary. Her team has successfully enabled FDA approvals of seven oncology drugs since 2013. Dr. Gong has more than 18 years of experience in the development of drugs and diagnostics. Previously, she was Executive Director of IVD & CDx at Premier Research Group. At Prometheus Therapeutics & Diagnostics, she was Associate Director, Medical Diagnostics, led development of biomarker assays for pharmaceutical companies. Additionally, she worked at Pfizer for 10 years in a variety of positions of increasing responsibility. In her last position at Pfizer, Dr. Gong managed a multi-disciplinary team including in-vitro/vivo biology, PDM, drug safety and biomarker research groups. She was a key contributor for an antibody drug that entered clinical development. Dr. Gong received her medical training from An Hui Medical University, MS degree from Sun Yat-Sen University and her Ph.D. degree in cancer biology at Wayne State University.
