The U.S. Market Welcomes Innovative Scandinavian Companies—All Sizes

As an expert in Scandinavian business in the U.S., I often hear company leaders express concerns about their company's size in relation to the U.S. market, and therefore hesitate to take the leap across the pond.

Seeing great companies leaving money on the table every day hurts my heart, and I want to assure you that size is not a barrier.

In fact, my experience has shown that Scandinavian companies, with their high-quality, innovative technology across multiple sectors, are highly sought after in the American market and are thriving.

Americans hold a very positive view of Scandinavians, and they say we are easy to do business with, hardworking, and honest. So, regardless of your company's size, what truly matters is your product quality, commitment to good customer service, and the drive to succeed.

Throughout my career, I've assisted numerous Scandinavian companies in their entry into the U.S. market. It is, of course, crucial to understand the local market dynamics and establish a strong network.

You don't need to conquer the entire market from the outset or have all the answers before you begin capturing business in the U.S. Instead, focus on a specific region of the U.S. where your industry is well represented and where you can establish a support network. SACC Georgia, a regional chamber, is an excellent starting point. They can connect you with individuals who have practical experience to share as you embark on your market entry journey.

While doing your due diligence is important, don't get overwhelmed by expensive advice and market analyses from consultants. I've found that the key to success is to start selling your product and generating revenue as soon as possible. One of the most effective ways to achieve this is by hiring someone who is familiar with your industry in the U.S. market and can bring a book of business. This strategic move can provide you with invaluable insights and a competitive edge.

If you need assistance finding your first American hire, the YER team and I have long experience in recruiting and are ready to share our expertise. If you have already identified the perfect colleague whom you would like to hire, my company offers a comprehensive payroll and benefits service that makes your first hire quick and easy. Either way, we are happy to chat with you about your plans.

Expat Tax Break: How the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion and Foreign Housing Exclusion/Deduction May Help Reduce Your Tax Bill

Foreign Housing Exclusion/Deduction have been highlighted as crucial tax benefits for those living and working outside the U.S. Eligible individuals, including U.S. citizens and resident aliens who meet specific residency or physical presence requirements, can significantly reduce their tax bill.

For the 2024 tax year, up to $126,500 of earned income can be excluded, and housing costs may also be deductible, with limits adjusting for inflation to $37,950. These provisions are designed to alleviate the financial burden for mobile employees and their employers.

However, there are misconceptions about these benefits, such as the minimum time required abroad to qualify. Furthermore, U.S. government employees are excluded from these benefits. For optimal tax efficiency, it's advised to start foreign assignments early in the year.

For detailed eligibility requirements and to maximize your benefits, contacting Aprio’s Global Mobility Services is recommended. Their team, fluent in over 60 languages, is prepared to assist with international tax planning, ensuring you or your employees can make the most of these exclusions.
