CJ Woods, SACSA President
Greetings SACSA,

You will notice that this SACSAlert is dedicated to our upcoming conference. Our conference theme, "Rising Higher in Raleigh: Connecting Theory, Practice, and Purpose" challenges us to take a holistic approach to our profession. Although our time in Raleigh, NC will be short, the impact of SACSA on the local community and economy will be impactful.

While attending the conference, let's be prepared to be challenged in every aspect of the work that we do on behalf of our institutions and students we serve. Equally, let's make enduring commitments to better of our association by being present, paying it forward, and supporting the philanthropic mission of the SACSA Foundation. You will be hearing from the SACSA Foundation during the conference to raise our giving to support scholarships, innovation, and research. Let's answer the call! The SACSA Executive Council has committed, as part of our board appointments, to contribute annually to the SACSA Foundation. We will have 100% participation by the time we meet in Raleigh.

Join us as we Rise Higher in Raleigh! 70 Years Strong.

CJ Woods, Ph.D.
SACSA President

SACSAStoryMy SACSA Story, Dr. Bill McDonald
Membership & Recruitment Committee

Dr. Bill McDonald
As a Dean of Students at the University of Georgia, Dr Bill McDonald has a big job at a big university! In his role, he supports his colleagues who oversee student care and outreach, student activities, student veteran resource center, disability resource center, and university testing services. He didn't always know he was going to be a student affairs practitioner, however - his original passion was to work for the YMCA! Bill received his B.A. from UNC-Chapel Hill, his M.A. from Appalachian State University, and his Ed.D. from UT-Knoxville. Working in housing as an RA changed his mind about his YMCA career path, and along the way, he became a SACSA member and attended his first SACSA in Greenville, South Carolina, in 1993.

Since then, he has served in various SACSA leadership roles and found a community within SACSA, describing the organization very simply as, "his favorite conference". He has been on the SACSA Executive Council as a Member at Large, President Elect, President, and Past President. He has also been heavily invested in the Mid Manager's Institute (MMI) over the years, serving as director of MMI for two years and serving twice as faculty for the institute. In addition to service, he has been involved in scholarship for the association, serving as associate editor for the College Student Affairs Journal, SACSA's publication, and has been published in the journal several times.

The SACSA family keeps him coming back to the conference, along with the values, and the quality of the program. His advice to those considering involvement in a professional association is, "SACSA is a great place to be!" He enjoys meeting new people at SACSA, and notes that he always meets someone new in addition to seeing friends that he has known for decades in the profession. His dedication to both SACSA and his students is evident. His favorite part of his role at UGA is connecting with students; he estimates that over 2000 students have his phone number, and he enjoys receiving their life updates by text!

Favorite SACSA Memory: I have a number of great memories as a member in SACSA. Most of my memories center around the strong leaders and professionals that make up the organization. One my favorite memories is serving as the Conference Chair for SACSA 2016. Working with an amazing conference team while planning and implementing a conference for my colleagues was something I will never forget. I still today see those team members who planned the conference with me as some of my closest colleagues in the profession.

Why Do You Give to the Foundation? I believe SACSA has much to give to its members. The size, dedication to professionalism and collegiality, make the organization great. It is important that our colleagues have an opportunity to take part in "SACSA Time." In giving to the SACSA Foundation, I hope to help others have the opportunities in SACSA that have been afforded to me.
