Critical Path For Foreflight
by David St. George
Flight test applicants often ask if planning and flying with Foreflight (or other EFBs) is acceptable for FAA evaluations. The FAA is very clear that so long as the data is current, EFBs may be used as a substitute for paper charts and docs. DPEs must accept this technology, but applicants must demonstrate full proficiency and EFBs are not a substitute for any installed avionics. The other important caveat is that every applicant must be able to function safely in the case of a failure (have a backup chart *and* calculator). If applicants use their iPad as a primary navigator - ignoring the beautiful panel-mounted equipment - I can almost guarantee your iPad will have a "DPE-induced failure" during your flight test.
Another common problem is that many pilots - applicants *and* CFIs - do not use Foreflight to its full capacity. They "hunt and peck" for tidbits of information and do not use a formal process to comprehensively brief a flight. See this SAFE blog for the "critical path" to get full value from your Foreflight (1/3 off for SAFE members), including all the required items in 91.103.

What? You Still Don't
Understand The New
MOSAIC Stall Speeds?
| | There are two MOSAIC stall speed limits, a Vs0 of 61 knots for light sport aircraft certification and a Vs1 of 59 knots for sport pilots. Is that confusing, or what? How does it work in practice? | | |
Long-time SAFE sponsor Gleim Aviation has created a free one-page fact sheet to help un-confuse CFIs already struggling to understand the new Sport Pilot Regulations. That new rule creates category Light Sport and greatly expands airman privileges of Sport Pilots. The new category Light Sport aircraft has no weight limit and allows top speeds of as much as 250 knots.
Industry welcomed passage of the new Light Sport Aircraft rules and expects a boost in both new Sport Pilots and existing Sport Pilots ready to explore heavier, better equipped aircraft. SAFE published a blog on the implications of MOSAIC for flight training. Register for our LIVE SAFE webinar on MOSAIC, November 30th at 8pm EST.

ATC Uses "Magic Words"
Your Student Should Know Them
| | |
by David St George
SAFE Executive Director
A pilot's experience and discipline shows most clearly in the radio phraseology they use. We've all heard a new learner on the frequency struggling through their first attempts with the radio. We should all commiserate with the newbie's word salad, since we've been there ourselves.
But too many CFIs take over radio operation for beginners, depriving them of important knowledge. New pilots need this practice, because ATC phraseology is initially a foreign language. At takeoff, for instance, "ready to go" is often used outside of busy airspace when ready for takeoff, but its use frowned upon in busy metropolitan airspace...To continue reading click Magic Words For ATC.

How To Be CFI Of The Year
Your Chances Have Never Been Better
| | |
In a press release, the sponsor General Aviation Awards (GAA) committee said that the number of nominations has been falling recently and is encouraging schools, universities, FSDOs and other aviation organizations to identify and nominate those CFIs, maintenance professionals and FAASTeam members who deserve recognition. (Last year's winners shown in photo).
CFI Of The Year and the other award winners are chosen first at the FSDO level, then compete for the national title. The winner of that competition will win a trip to AirVenture, where the awards are officially presented. Among the spoils: a commemorative plaque and numerous gifts from industry sponsors.
