Medical Reform Legislation

Senator Jim Inhofe (R-OK) introduced S.571, the Pilot's Bill of Rights 2 on February 26, 2015. Recently the bill was referred to the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation. The Senator's press release provides the details.

A key point in the legislation is third-class medical reform. The bill, if adopted as written, will allow private pilots to act as PIC of non-commercial flights under both VFR and IFR in aircraft weighing up to 6,000 without a third class medical.

SAFE encourages you to read the bill and, communicate you opinions with your congressional representatives regarding S.571 and H.R. 1062.

Government Affairs Committee

Kudos to committee chair Cliff Chetwin and all the members of the SAFE Government Affairs Committee. They have been burning the midnight oil and then some in developing responses to NPRMs and proposed changes to numerous FAA training publications.

SAFE's response to the ATD Direct to Final Rule was quoted by many in the industry as support grew towards the end of the comment period. The many positive responses were not enough to overcome two negative comments. The ATD Direct to Final Rule effort ended, not as most in aviation anticipated. We are confident that an NPRM regarding allowable time in ATDs will be published sometime again.

The committee has prepared a response to an NPRM regarding Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAVs). Review our response at Docket FAA-2015-0150. They also drafted comments on Instrument Flying Handbook and Advanced Avionics Handbook as part of SAFE's participation on the FAA/Industry Working Group. SAFE is also represented on the sub- committee creating the new Authorized-Instructor Airmen Certification Standard.

Pilot Proficiency Demonstration: Loss of Control
Loss of Control is not a new topic to SAFE members. The organization, through member Rich Stowell, has issued white papers and conducted numerous seminars on the subject. The NTSB has put Loss of Control on its general aviation 2015 Most Wanted List. With that in mind, SAFE is sponsoring a month-long, multi-faceted, demonstration that combines live, interactive webinars with a flight simulation scenario with the purpose of demonstrating the latest training systems aimed at reducing loss of control accidents.

Stasi Poulos, CEO of Mindstar Aviation said, "we really appreciate the support of

SAFE and EAA. This clearly shows a willingness of industry leaders to get out

in front of a very important issue for pilots; namely, loss of control." The demonstration launched on Wednesday, March 25 and will continue through April 19, 2015.

Rich Stowell will present a live, interactive webinar, Loss of Control and Stall/Spin Awareness, every Wednesday evening during the demonstration period. Doug Stewart will also be presenting a live, interactive webinar, Preparing for the Unexpected, on Thursday evenings. Concurrent with the seminars will be the opportunity to fly a training simulation, Shenandoah Sortie, at eight locations in the Washington DC area. Follow title links for more information.

Mindstar Aviation Community believes that quality flight simulation environments can help make us better, safer pilots. We agree and are excited to work with Mindstar Promoting Excellence in Aviation Education. For more information about Mindstar visit www.mindstarcommunity.com.

The SAFE Resource Center Wants Your Educational Materials!
The Resource Center at safepilots.org would like to expand its selection of teaching media. Most of the excellent papers, teaching tools, PowerPoints and videos have been created by our members in the course of their work as aviation educators. The Resource Center makes these tools available to all fellow members. Please consider taking a few minutes to submit your materials to us .  In particular, we are in need of media for topics including Navigation, Performance, and Regulations.

The SAFE Resource Center is one of the many benefits of YOUR membership! For access to the full array of instructional tools, visit  safepilots.org/members-only/library.

Nominations still open for positions on SAFE Board of Directors

Nominations for SAFE board directors closes at 0001Z, Friday, April 10. Every year, terms of three directors of SAFE end. Our by-laws set forth term limits - individuals can hold a director position for two concurrent terms (six years). Incumbent directors have three options at the end of their term - leave the board due to term limit, retire from the board after one term, or run for re-election at the end of their first term. This year's election will include one incumbent running for re-election.

Service to others is a time commitment, there is no escaping that fact. But have you ever heard a volunteer complain that their service was a waste of their time? No? Me neither. The rewards of service to others are amazing. This is an exciting time for your organization. SAFE is gaining. It is gaining momentum, credibility and success. Our membership numbers continue to grow. Our programs are expanding. We are moving along a path towards achieving our mission. You are already a part of that, you are a SAFE member. I challenge you to do more. Become a candidate for the SAFE board of directors. Visit the nominations page for information on completing you nomination.
