SAFE NEEDS THE BEST TO SERVE ON THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Election season is here once again, not just for a new President and some members of Congress, but also for SAFE Board of Directors.  Nominate yourself or someone else for this important position. The deadline to apply is April 18, 2016.

The SAFE board is made up of nine directors, who serve staggered three-year terms.  Three new directors are elected each year to fill the seats of those completing their term. SAFE Board members are limited to two consecutive three-year terms (six years total)

The process begins with this initial announcement. Nomination is the second step. Members who would like to be considered as a candidate for director should complete a simple nomination package and submit it to the Governance Committee for processing.   After a slate of candidates is developed, each is introduced to the membership through the web site, and finally, an online election will be held in June.

SAFE MENTORING PROGRAM REVITALIZED
A revitalized SAFE Mentor program is already attracting experienced SAFE CFIs willing to share their years of wisdom with less-experienced CFIs.

According to Ken Wittekiend, SAFE Board Liaison for the Programs Committee, at least five SAFE members totaling more 100 years of flight instruction experience have already volunteered to be mentors, with more added weekly.  Potential SAFE Mentors may volunteer by signing into the SAFE web site , then click on the Members Only button, then the Aviation Educator Mentoring Program.

Mentees must be SAFE members who are aviation educators or are in training to become aviation educators.

"Even experienced educators may occasionally want or need insights when teaching in new aircraft, or with new technologies and techniques," said Wittekiend, a five-time Master CFI and FAA Southwest Region CFI of the Year in 2009 and again in 2015.  "This revitalized free SAFE Mentor program is designed to help all CFIs become better instructors."

AIRMAN TESTING: WHAT'S NEW AND UPCOMING

The Airman Certification Standards, replacing the venerable Practical Test Standards, will become effective June 15, 2016.

Publication of the final ACS for Private and Instrument applicants is expected no later than the middle of next month.  Rewrites of the various FAA Handbooks on which many knowledge test questions are based will be issued between now and June 30.

Out-of-date questions on the Private and Instrument knowledge tests, such as use of ADF receivers or the now defunct EFAS, have been deleted.  There is a long list of deleted subject areas in the latest ACS update.

SAFE was one of the earliest aviation education organizations calling for updating of FAA testing and has served continuously on the various FAA and industry committees charged with testing improvements.
NEW AC 61-65F AVAILABLE FOR FREE DOWNLOAD

The FAA has just published the latest version of AC 61-65F, Certification: Pilots and Flight and Ground Instructors to answer certification procedural questions. It also includes approved versions of all sign-offs a CFI would normally use.   It has also been added to the SAFE app, available for iPods or Androids .

The new AC 61-65F also provides instruction on the mandatory new procedure for obtaining a student pilot certificate through IACRA, and the latest guidance for determining if a student pilot applicant reads, speaks and understands English well enough to meet the requirements.

Details on the new requirements for acquiring a new student pilot certificate, which cuts out the medical examiner and requires TSA vetting of the applicant, is available in the FAA's Student Pilot Application Requirements, published in the Federal Register on January 12, 2016.
